2012 VMA Video Of The Year Race Pits Drake Against Rihanna
With Katy Perry, M.I.A., Gotye also vying for VOTY prize, the ladies have an advantage in the coveted category.

<P>The fellas are going to have to bring their A game if they want to take home the Video of the Year moonman at the 29th annual <a href="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/vma/2012/">2012 MTV Video Music Awards</a>. Seeking to break the four-year run of female VOTY winners are Drake and Gotye, who will vie for the honor against <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/perry_katy/artist.jhtml">Katy Perry</a>, Rihanna and M.I.A.</P><P>The action will all go down live on September 6 at 8 p.m. EST from the Staples Center in Los Angeles during a show that will feature performances from four-time VMA veteran Alicia Keys and VMA first-timers One Direction. <a href="/news/articles/1690825/2012-video-music-awards-nominees.jhtml">Click here</a>

, which borrows from author Lewis Carroll's classic book "Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There," is a kind of shorthand look at the singer's hectic past few years.</P><P>Trapped in a labyrinth, Perry discovers her lost innocence in the form of a young girl, as she gets hounded by hellish paparazzi and finds her Prince Charming, who may have a double-cross in mind. Read into what you will, but Perry certainly doesn't play coy with this one.</P><P>Another girl with love troubles to work out on film is <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml/">Rihanna</a>. In her exploration of a love undone by <a href="/news/articles/1672801/rihanna-we-found-love-video.jhtml">substances and violence</a>
, she shares the screen with British boxer/model Dudley O'Shaughnessy as the pair of gutter punks stumble their way through Belfast, Ireland in a haze of post-coital bliss, drug-fueled benders and physical altercations.</P><P>There is no such angst in the body-painted video for <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/gotye/artist.jhtml">Gotye's</a> breakthrough hit, "Somebody That I Used to Know." In a nod to the low-concept efforts from MTV's early-1980's heyday, "Somebody" finds the mostly naked singer and equally exposed pal Kimbra blending into abstract background courtesy of geometrical shape body paint applied to match a piece of art created by Gotye's father, Frank de Backer.</P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/mia__4_/artist.jhtml">M.I.A.</a> hardly does anything that doesn't involve some political or social statement and the ghost-riding accompaniment to <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/02/03/mia-bad-girls-video-morocco/">"Bad Girls"</a> was no exception. In what appears to be a statement on the Saudi Arabian government's ban on female drivers, M.I.A. traveled to Morocco to film women in Arab garb getting behind the wheels and performing a type of stylized Middle Eastern form of drifting known as hagwalah.</P><P>If <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/drake/artist.jhtml">Drake</a> is going to score some VOTY moon rock, he's gonna have to share it with Rihanna. The Young Money MC who isn't afraid to show his sensitive side made one of the best videos of his career with the maudlin, monochromatic "Take Care."</P><P>Packed with expansive, icy landscapes, achingly tense slow-motion footage and artfully framed animals, the minimal clip doesn't really take you anywhere as it depicts the pair amid images of birds taking flight, bulls charging and a shower of arrows.</P><P>But, somehow, at the end, after the pair shares a tender, sexually charged embrace and all that's left is burning trees and smoking earth, you feel exhausted and satisfied.</P><P>Who will hop into a limo at night's end with the Video of the Year moonman? Lady Gaga Goes Goth For Fame Perfume Trailer

<P>Crunchy synths and a dance beat serve as the soundtrack to <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a>'s eye-catching <a href="http://littlemonsters.com/video/502a18bae898f2d661002e6c" target="_blank">trailer</a> for her <a href="/news/articles/1687383/lady-gaga-fame-perfume.jhtml">Fame fragrance</a>, which hits stores in September.</P><P>In the Steven Klein-directed spot, Gaga wears latex — and in some cases nothing — as she commands a spaceship full of beefy guys. In the commercial, several images are intercut to weave together a sci-fi, Goth-style story where Gaga rises from the primordial ooze that is her black eau de parfum.</P><P><iframe width="420" height="280" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/qwGE-mhfigA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></P><P>When she isn't completely drenched in the oily black liquid, she's standing alongside her army, embracing with one or two of them and looking generally fierce and glamorous in one of many space-age couture looks.</P><P>As the trailer comes to a close, little men are seen climbing a nude, oversize Gaga, a setup previously <a href="/news/articles/1689786/lady-gaga-nude-perfume-ad.jhtml">teased in an ad</a> for the Mother Monster's first foray into the world of celebrity-endorsed perfumes.</P><P>In the latest issue of <a href="/news/articles/1691464/lady-gaga-september-vogue.jhtml"><i>Vogue,</i> Gaga opens up</a> about working with beauty brand Coty to perfect her perfume, making sure that while it looks black in the bottle, it sprays on completely clear. "The fragrance is called Fame. It must be black," she said in the issue for which she graces the cover in a Marc Jacobs gown. "It must be enticing. You must want to lick and touch and feel it, but the look of it must terrify you."</P><P>In addition to the trailer, Gaga previously released a <a href="/news/articles/1689920/lady-gaga-formulation-film-teases-fame-fragrance.jhtml">short film called "Formulation"</a> to get fans hyped about the release. <P>It seems that everyone has the fever these days. That fever is for the steamy erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey." And there are two more Hollywood A-listers who are potentially getting all hot and bothered.</P><P>Well, one of them is, at least.</P><P>Angelina Jolie had been rumored to be in the running to direct the big-screen adaptation of the E.L. James novel. <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2012/06/fifty-shades-of-grey-heating-up-with-angelina-jolie-talk/" target="_blank">Deadline</a> reported that the film's studio had had a "conversation or two" with the actress about possibly helming the sexy film franchise. The trilogy follows the S&M relationship between shy college coed Ana Steele and her domineering billionaire beau, Christian Grey.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Would Nina Dobrev Be In 'Fifty Shades'?" id="vid:768309" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>However, Jolie's rep tells <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/angelina-jolie-direct-fifty-shades-grey-332449" target="_blank"><i>The Hollywood Reporter</i></a> that there haven't been any talks with the studio, Universal Pictures' Focus Features, about her coming on board to direct.</P><P>Well, with the studio on the lookout for not only a director but also a leading lady, they might want to call up the <a href="/news/articles/1686727/miley-cyrus-liam-hemsworth-engaged-timeline.jhtml">newly engaged Miley Cyrus</a>. Lady Gaga Confirms New Album's Title Is ARTPOP

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a>'s fans won't have to wait until September to learn the name of her next release after all. After tweeting out a photo of her <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/08/03/lady-gaga-unveils-new-tattoo-pic/">new tattoo, which reads ARTPOP</a>, last week, she took to Twitter over the weekend to confirm that the ink is indeed the name of her 2013 album release.</P><P>"Make sure when writing about my new album/project ARTPOP that you CAPITALIZE the title, *its all in the details* good morning twitter!" she <a href="https://twitter.com/ladygaga/status/232114376067403776"_blank">wrote</a> on Sunday.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Lady Gaga Has The Title And Concept For Her Next Album" id="vid:717202" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Mother Monster originally revealed her plan to <a href="/news/articles/1686922/lady-gaga-new-album-title.jhtml">drop the album's title</a> in September back in June before apparently getting antsy and releasing the name a month ahead of schedule. It's a title she's had in mind since MTV News spoke to her last year.</P><P>"I've started writing it and I have the name for it, and all the concepts are <a href="/news/articles/1675458/lady-gaga-next-album.jhtml">beginning to flourish</a> and take place," she said in December. "I'm excited to put it out, but it's not done yet. So I'll put it out when it's done."</P><P>Gaga has been making time to record <i>ARTPOP</i> while on her <i>Born This Way</i> tour. She reportedly enlisted the help of <a href="/news/articles/1690576/lady-gaga-whitesnake-guitarist-doug-aldrich-new-album.jhtml">Whitesnake guitarist Doug Aldrich</a> for the album. The twosome hit the studio with Gaga's longtime collaborator DJ White Shadow in Los Angeles.</P><P>She also recently teased fans with a new song, <a href="/news/articles/1690196/lady-gaga-new-music-car-new-york.jhtml">blasting it out of her car</a> while in New York City. She even implied that the dance track would be the first single from the new album. DJ White Shadow produced the track.</P><P>Gaga has also been playing her new piano-heavy song "Princess Die" while on tour. During one stop, she opened up a bit about her next album. "Let's just say I feel, I feel that when I wrote <i>Born This Way,</i> I demonstrated a sense of maturity," she said. He's stacking up several film projects, including "Empire State," which he's currently shooting in New Orleans. He will also film the thriller "Paranoia" with Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman and then work begins on the second "Hunger Games" flick. Meanwhile, Miley is working on a new album.</P><P>All that work doesn't seem to make her less excited for this new chapter in their relationship. Whose bright idea? Neon Museum to hit Vegas

Flashy casinos, jackpots and showgirls; the images of Las Vegas that come to mind have one thing in common -- they are invariably lit by the hundreds of neon signs that make the city glow.
Las Vegas, a beacon to gamblers in the Nevada desert, will become even brighter when the Neon Museum opens on October 27.
Home to more than 150 neon signs dating from the 1930s to today, it took Bill Marion, the chair of the Neon Museum, 15 years to collect and plan the exhibition.
"The signs are a visual history of Las Vegas," says Marion. "Each sign has a unique story behind it -- about casino bosses and owners who built the city, about the mob figures who associated with them, about the entertainers who used to perform here."
The museum also works with the City of Las Vegas on the Las Vegas Signs Project, to restore and install vintage signs along Las Vegas Boulevard between Sahara and Washington Avenues.

<P>For nearly two decades now, either due to her multinational leanings (the Colombian's music is as indebted to Latin American rhythms as it is to Arabic dance, Euro disco and red-white-and-blue rock) or because she is sort of insane (see last year's <a href="/news/articles/1626493/shakiras-wolf-global-pop-wolf-inside-us-all.jhtml"><i>She Wolf</i> album</a>), Shakira has managed to carve out her own, rather indefinable niche in pop music.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Shakira's 'Loca' Music Video Premiere" id="id:1648976" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>On Wednesday (September 29), she premiered the video for "Loca," the first single off her upcoming <i>Sale el Sol</i> album (due October 19). And while it's not exactly a unique artistic endeavor — it echoes sentiments already expressed by the likes of <a href="/news/articles/1635155/matt-kim-call-erykah-badus-nude-window-seat-video-more-than-just-shock-value.jhtml">Matt & Kim (in their "Lessons Learned" clip)</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1634940/erykah-badu-explains-nudity-window-seat-video.jhtml">Erykah Badu</a> (in her firestormy "Window Seat" vid) — it's still undoubtedly her ... mostly because none of her high-gloss pop contemporaries would ever dare attempt something like it.</P><P>Shot run-and-gun style in Barcelona, "Loca" follows Shakira and her crew — which includes a few cameramen and, somewhat improbably, British rapper Dizzee Rascal — on a madcap adventure that includes roller-skating, public wardrobe changes, motorcycle cruising, an illicit hop in a public fountain (a move that landed her in hot, uh, water with <a href="http://www.barcelonareporter.com/index.php?/news/comments/shakira_loca_in_barcelona_sale_el_sol_-_the_sun_comes_out_released_on_octob/" target="_blank">local authorities</a>) and, of course, plenty of hip shaking. It's a decidedly guerrilla endeavor that appears to have been done on a budget hovering around zero (aside from a performance scene, the entire thing appears to have been shot on handheld cameras). The Britneys, Beyoncés and Gagas would probably never make something like this ... and yet, here it <i>works,</i> mostly because, well, it just sort of seems like the kind of thing Shakira would do.</P><P>For that alone, she deserves to be praised. Because unlike Matt & Kim (or Erykah Badu, really), Shakira has plenty to lose. Her albums are big events, things that resonate across continents, and it would be rather easy (or, at least, expected) for her to come out of the gate with a big-budget, glossy pop video. Instead, we get "Loca," which is none of those things, and is probably better because of that.</P><P>And though it features some near-nudity and some illegal activity, the thing that resonates most about the "Loca" video is that none of that bad behavior is played up for shock value. Instead, it all helps match the kinetic, herky-jerky energy of the song itself. "Loca" is the rare video that doesn't attempt to outshine the song it's based on. Instead, it complements it. This is a very lively song, after all, so what better way to capture that than with a very lively video?</P><P>There's a calculated madness to the "Loca" video, a vibrant, unchained energy, the kind very few artists can conjure up, no matter how big the budget. And, come to think of it, that's a pretty accurate way of summing up Shakira's entire career. It's called synergy, people.</P><P><i>What do you think of Shakira's "Loca" video? <P>It seems that everyone has the fever these days. That fever is for the steamy erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey." And there are two more Hollywood A-listers who are potentially getting all hot and bothered.</P><P>Well, one of them is, at least.</P><P>Angelina Jolie had been rumored to be in the running to direct the big-screen adaptation of the E.L. James novel. <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2012/06/fifty-shades-of-grey-heating-up-with-angelina-jolie-talk/" target="_blank">Deadline</a> reported that the film's studio had had a "conversation or two" with the actress about possibly helming the sexy film franchise. The trilogy follows the S&M relationship between shy college coed Ana Steele and her domineering billionaire beau, Christian Grey.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Would Nina Dobrev Be In 'Fifty Shades'?" id="vid:768309" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>However, Jolie's rep tells <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/angelina-jolie-direct-fifty-shades-grey-332449" target="_blank"><i>The Hollywood Reporter</i></a> that there haven't been any talks with the studio, Universal Pictures' Focus Features, about her coming on board to direct.</P><P>Well, with the studio on the lookout for not only a director but also a leading lady, they might want to call up the <a href="/news/articles/1686727/miley-cyrus-liam-hemsworth-engaged-timeline.jhtml">newly engaged Miley Cyrus</a>. One day after announcing her impending nuptials to "Hunger Games" star Liam Hemsworth, she <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/mileycyrus" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "Reading 50 shades of grey next to the oldest dude ever. #awkward."</P><P>Even if Cyrus doesn't get the part of Ana, she is working on her own sexy project. The singer is currently hard at work on her <a href="/news/articles/1686813/miley-cyrus-sexy-album-liam-hemsworth.jhtml">next studio album</a>, which sources say will be "very adult and sexy." The insiders add that Miley's music is reflecting her personal life, as she plans her wedding and approaches her big twentieth birthday later this year. The insider continues, "We are watching a young girl turn into a young woman."</P><P>But back to "Fifty Shades." It already does everything else, your phone may as well speak for you too.An Android app by Japan's largest mobile services provider NTT DoCoMo claims to allow people to translate their calls almost immediately.
The next time you need to ask for directions to an obscure Hokkaido dairy farm, you can just approach a local and say it in English, and your phone will take care of the rest.
It is the latest smartphone app to launch amongst a bunch of similar programs aiming to allow people to converse freely in any language. And if it works according to plan, travel may have just got less confusing.
Technology like this will potentially usurp the human translation services industry. And, possibly, Pimsleur.
Using DoCoMo's app, called Hanashite Hon'yaku, people speaking in different languages on either end of a phone conversation can almost immediately translate what they are saying to each other.

Shakira Separates From Boyfriend Of 11 Years
But Columbian pop star says she and Antonio de la Rua view split as 'temporary.'

<P>With Valentine's Day a little more than a month away, the list of celebrity splits keeps on growing.</P><P>In a post on her <a href="http://www.shakira.com/news/title/france-11011" target="_blank">blog</a>, Shakira announced on Monday that she and her boyfriend of nearly 11 years, Antonio de la Rúa, are taking a break. While rumors of wedding bells have emerged about the couple in the past, the singer confirmed they have been separated since last August but chose to keep the news under wraps.</P><P>"We made a mutual decision to take time apart from our romantic relationship," Shakira wrote in her post. "Throughout this time we have continued to work together hand in hand, have remained close and have kept the details absolutely private until now."</P><P>The announcement comes fresh on the heels of other long-term celebrity couples calling it quits, including <a href="/news/articles/1649757/courteney-cox-david-arquette-separate.jhtml">Courteney Cox and David Arquette</a>, who separated last year after 11 years of marriage, and <a href="/news/articles/1655153/mila-kunis-macaulay-culkin-split.jhtml">Mila Kunis and Macaulay Culkin</a>, who ended their nine-year relationship earlier this month.</P><P>Shakira added that she and de la Rúa, who is a lawyer and the son of former Argentine president Fernando de la Rúa, "view this period of separation as temporary," explaining that they would continue to work together.</P><P>"Antonio continues to oversee and conduct my business and career interests as he has always done," she said. "We move forward as partners, developing projects together, working hand in hand and in close communication."</P><P>The singer also noted that the two are an "exceptional couple and partners," and stressed that the separation was amicable. "Our friendship and understanding of one another is unwavering and indestructible," she said.</P>
