Rihanna Defies Oprah's 'Badass' Expectations in Interview Teaser
In a preview for Oprah's August 19 sit-down with the star, Rihanna opens up about her fear of climbing the ladder of fame.

<P><MTVNLINK type="artist" id="1940303">Rihanna</MTVNLINK> is all about making trips to her Barbados homeland to show some love, and this time she's brought along a familiar face: Oprah.</P><P>And from the looks of a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVd8EwppORw" target="_blank">clip</a> released online, the two are so familiar that they look like they've been friends for years as they hang around the house. In the teaser for Rihanna's appearance on "Oprah's Next Chapter," which airs August 19 on OWN, the two get even more comfortable than the clothes they're wearing as they if ride through the city and chat before a gorgeous ocean view deck.</P><P><iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/uVd8EwppORw?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></P><P>"I went there with my own ideas of who she was by watching the videos and listening to her music," Oprah says in the clip's opening scene. "I thought she was going to be kind of a badass, kind of a hard-edged rocker/pop woman. Nothing could have been farther from the truth."</P><P>As it turns out, the pop titan opened up completely with Oprah about her fear of climbing the ladder of fame, getting emotional at times.</P><P>"I'm super-duper afraid of the pedestal that comes with fame," Rihanna says, before admitting her loneliness.</P><P>Cameras followed the pair as they drove to the singer's old neighborhood (with Rihanna behind the wheel) and interacted with the locals. As if she was stripped of her fame, Oprah tells viewers that she was surprised at how low-key the visit was. "It wasn't like a big superstar, megastar, pop star had arrived in the neighborhood, it was just run in as though she had gone to the grocery store and came back."</P><P><i>Will you tune into Rihanna's appearance on "Oprah's Next Chapter"? Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus Snared In 'American Idol' Judge Rumor Mill
Khloe Kardashian, Stacy Keibler and Kelly Osbourne on list of potential 'X Factor' hosts.
By Gil Kaufman
<P>Giving new meaning to the phrase "throw it up against the wall and see what sticks," the roster of A and B-list stars reportedly in the mix to spice up the judging panels and take over hosting duties on <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/topic/american_idol/">"American Idol"</a> and "X Factor" multiplied by a factor of 10 on Tuesday (July 10).</P><P>We've already told you that former "Idol" runner-up <a href="/news/articles/1689286/adam-lambert-american-idol-judge-rumors.jhtml">Adam Lambert</a>
is reportedly being eyed to join the panel for the 12th season of the show. We're not sure yet who he'd replace on the three-person panel, but Jennifer Lopez is rumored to be on her way out along with fellow two-season vet Steven Tyler. Even lone wolf "Idol" OG Randy Jackson is said to be on the potential chopping block as the show looks to shake things up to compete with the fresher celeb faces on "Factor" and "The Voice."</P><P><a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/328622/american-idol-miley-cyrus-katy-perry-nicki-minaj-fergie-and-will-i-am-being-considered-as-judges" target="_blank"><I>E! Cyrus is also not likely to put off her recording and movie career to join the "Idol" family, but with the Black Eyed Peas on hiatus and their solo careers in a holding pattern Fergie and frequent "Idol" mentor will.i.am could be legitimate contenders.</P><P>This type of bold-name speculation takes place just about every summer. Remember when <a href="/news/articles/1646174/mariah-carey-running-be-american-idol-judge.jhtml">Mariah Carey</a>
was touted as the next "Idol" judge after negotiations with J. were said to be circling a gig on former "Idol" lead judge Simon Cowell's "X Factor." Britney, of course, ended up signing on the dotted line, along with Demi Lovato, but "Factor" still has one vacancy to fill: host.</P><P>Actually, make that <a href="/news/articles/1679730/x-factor-new-judges-hosts.jhtml"><I>two</I> spots</a>
. Following the ouster of Steve Jones after the first season, Cowell is looking for one female and one male host to anchor the show and the alleged list of potential chatters is impressive, and a bit random.</P><P><a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/328798/x-factor-considering-khlo-kardashian-odom-stacy-keibler-and-more-as-possible-hosts" target="_blank"><I>E!</I> also reported</a> that the not-so-short list ranges from George Clooney's girlfriend Stacy Keibler to Khloé Kardashian Odom, Kelly Osbourne, Mario Lopez, sportscaster Erin Andrews and BET's Terrence J.</P><P>An unnamed source told the site that Cowell is in no hurry to fill those vacancies. "They're doing the auditions without a host so it's no big deal they don't have hosts right now," the source said. "Simon really wants to take his time. It's also one of Tokyo's biggest tourist attractions, where visitors gather in the pre-dawn hours to gawp at the frenetic auction of dozens of enormous tuna.

In the 1970s, New York City's Union Square was a seedy, crime-ridden area of Manhattan until a small farmers' market took root and revitalized the area.
The market has grown into one of the world's best, with more than 140 regional farmers, fishmongers, bakers and butchers catering to more than 60,000 shoppers on peak days.
The greenmarket showcases more than just fresh-picked produce, though.
Celebrity chefs often use the space for cooking demonstrations, there are school tours that teach local kids about seasonality and healthy eating and education programs, including one that helps New Yorkers learn about composting.

Shakira's 'Loca' Video: Watch An Exclusive Preview!

<P>In her previous videos, <MTVNLINK type="artist" id="504144">Shakira</MTVNLINK>'s gone <a href="/news/articles/1638066/shakira-unveils-waka-waka-this-time-africa.jhtml">global</a>, <a href="/news/articles/1632776/shakira-scores-love-with-tennis-pro-rafael-nadal-new-video.jhtml">game-set-match</a> and, after shooting <a href="/news/articles/1617328/shakira-summons-her-inner-wolf-eye-popping-new-video.jhtml">"She Wolf,"</a> probably to the chiropractor. And now, in her new video for "Loca," she's gone guerrilla.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Loca (Sneak Peek)" id="vid:576604" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>Shot run-and-gun style in Barcelona last month, the "Loca" clip follows Shakira and her crew on a madcap dash around the city — including scenes shot in a public fountain and on the back of a motorcycle, which got her in <a href="http://www.barcelonareporter.com/index.php?/news/comments/shakira_loca_in_barcelona_sale_el_sol_-_the_sun_comes_out_released_on_octob/" target="_blank">hot water</a> with local authorities. Thanks to all that, it's a decidedly different turn from her past efforts, most of which were big-budget affairs, and all of which avoided getting her in trouble with the law.</P><P>"Loca" — which features a cameo by British rapper Dizzee Rascal — is the first single off her new album, <i>Sale El Sol</i> (due October 19), and while the full video won't premiere until Wednesday on MTV.com, you can watch an exclusive 30-second sneak peek right now. There's roller skating, frolicking in a fountain, (very public) costume changes, motorcycle riding and — of course — a whole lot of hip-shaking, too. It's sexy, cheeky and, yes, even a little bit crazy, but then again, what Shakira video isn't? And while "Loca" may be a departure from her previous clips, what makes it great is the simple fact that <i>none</i> of her pop contemporaries — not even Lady Gaga — would dare try something like this. And that's why we love her so much.</P><P>But why are you reading this? Have a look at our exclusive preview of "Loca" right now, and make sure to check back on Wednesday for the full experience. Trust us, it's worth it.</P><P><i>Are you excited for Shakira's "Loca" video? Let us know in the comments!</i></P>

Siobhan Magnus Eliminated On 'American Idol'
Michael Lynche and Casey James join her in the bottom three.
By Gil Kaufman
<P>It's getting to that point in season nine of "American Idol" when it gets hard to guess who will go home every week because the competition has gotten so tight. But a night after Simon Cowell compared her tortured screaming to the sound of a woman giving birth, America decided that it wasn't quite ready for an "Idol" champ as quirky as tattooed glassblower Siobhan Magnus.</P><P>After charming the judges and voting public with her offbeat style sense, powerhouse vocals and sometimes sassy backtalk to the judges, Magnus' luck ran out after she closed Tuesday's show with an all-over-the-place take on <a href="/news/articles/1637939/siobhan-magnus-wins-judges-back-with-any-man-mine.jhtml">Shania Twain's "Any Man of Mine."</a></P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder" id="id:1632717"></div><p></P><P>Magnus was given the boot on a night that was packed with performances from <a href="/news/articles/1638032/shakiras-gypsy-gets-boost-from-rascal-flatts-on-american-idol.jhtml">Rascal Flatts, Shakira</a> and Lady Antebellum, and her exit came after more than 33 million votes were lodged Tuesday.</P><P>The results began with host Ryan Seacrest creating three groups of two. The first pairing included Magnus and Lee Dewyze, followed by Casey James and Michael Lynche and then Aaron Kelly and Crystal Bowersox. Cutting the tension immediately, Seacrest walked Magnus across the stage for her first trip to the bottom three, alongside Lynche and James.</P><P>The first singer sent back to safety was <a href="/news/articles/1635660/american-idol-judges-save-michael-lynche.jhtml">Lynche, who dodged a bullet for the second time</a> this season. "Tonight is different because everyone did well last night, so there's no shame in the bottom three," he said before being sent back to the couches. With James safe, that left the woman Seacrest called an "independent spirit" standing center stage in her salmon-colored miniskirt-and-tank-top combo.</P><P>Saying she tried out for the show for her little sisters, Magnus hoped that she had a big impact on them. "I did my best, and I hope that I was able to show them what we're all capable of," she said, clearly holding back some emotion.</P><P>Keeping her composure, Magnus went out with a typically sassy run through Aretha Franklin's "Think," which got the final five and the whole audience on their feet and clapping along. It ended, of course, with one of her signature ear-piercing screams and then some hugs for her family, who told her, "You're still our star."</P><P>This being a country-themed week, the show kicked off with a live performance from twangy trio Rascal Flatts, who played their cowboy-pop ditty "Unstoppable." Along with the usual time-killing Ford video and some other promotional shenanigans, the first half of the show also featured season-four "Idol" superstar Carrie Underwood flying in from her national tour just to introduce her current opening act, the <a href="/news/articles/1638035/sons-sylvia-from-next-great-american-band-american-idol.jhtml">little-known brotherly band Sons of Sylvia</a>.</P><P>Bringing a harder-edge, new-wave country vibe than they displayed during their winning run last year on "The Next Great America Band," the all-black-clad Clark brothers played their debut single, "Love Left to Lose." The tune mixed straightforward radio rock with country touches, including fiddle, mandolin and rocked-out resonator guitar over a thudding backbeat.</P><P>With a whole hour to fill, the next break featured <a href="/news/articles/1637933/lady-antebellum-honored-perform-on-american-idol.jhtml">ACM winners Lady Antebellum</a> performing their triple-platinum smash "Need You Now." The Fleetwood Mac-like ballad of romantic longing that has helped propel the album of the same name to the best sales figures of any 2010 release found singers Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott trading off yearning vocals as third member Dave Haywood played along on a grand piano in the background.</P><P>The night's final performance was a truly odd combo, as hip-shaker Shakira was joined by Flatts for the spare belly-dance/ boot-scooter "Gypsy," which she opened by showing off her harmonica skills. Joined by two dancers, Shakira worked her flowing red skirt and swiveled her hips as she melded her yodely vocals with the high, lonesome sound of Flatts' Gary LeVox.</P><P>Next week's mentor will be Harry Connick Jr., who will lead the finalists through the songbook of Frank Sinatra.</P><P><I>What did you think of tonight's elimination? Did Siobhan deserve to go home? Leave your comments below!</I></P><P><b>Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/topic/american_idol/index.jhtml">"American Idol" page</a>, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.</b></P>

Lady Gaga Goes Goth For Fame Perfume Trailer
Mother Monster's dark, high-fashion clip was directed by photographer Steven Klein.
By Jocelyn Vena
<P>Crunchy synths and a dance beat serve as the soundtrack to <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a>'s eye-catching <a href="http://littlemonsters.com/video/502a18bae898f2d661002e6c" target="_blank">trailer</a> for her <a href="/news/articles/1687383/lady-gaga-fame-perfume.jhtml">Fame fragrance</a>, which hits stores in September.</P><P>In the Steven Klein-directed spot, Gaga wears latex — and in some cases nothing — as she commands a spaceship full of beefy guys. In the commercial, several images are intercut to weave together a sci-fi, Goth-style story where Gaga rises from the primordial ooze that is her black eau de parfum.</P><P><iframe width="420" height="280" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/qwGE-mhfigA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></P><P>When she isn't completely drenched in the oily black liquid, she's standing alongside her army, embracing with one or two of them and looking generally fierce and glamorous in one of many space-age couture looks.</P><P>As the trailer comes to a close, little men are seen climbing a nude, oversize Gaga, a setup previously <a href="/news/articles/1689786/lady-gaga-nude-perfume-ad.jhtml">teased in an ad</a> for the Mother Monster's first foray into the world of celebrity-endorsed perfumes.</P><P>In the latest issue of <a href="/news/articles/1691464/lady-gaga-september-vogue.jhtml"><i>Vogue,</i> Gaga opens up</a> about working with beauty brand Coty to perfect her perfume, making sure that while it looks black in the bottle, it sprays on completely clear. "The fragrance is called Fame. It must be black," she said in the issue for which she graces the cover in a Marc Jacobs gown. "It must be enticing. You must want to lick and touch and feel it, but the look of it must terrify you."</P><P>In addition to the trailer, Gaga previously released a <a href="/news/articles/1689920/lady-gaga-formulation-film-teases-fame-fragrance.jhtml">short film called "Formulation"</a> to get fans hyped about the release. The singer is also featured in a print ad wearing an <a href="/news/articles/1690972/lady-gaga-racy-fame-perfume-ad.jhtml">S&M latex bodysuit</a>.</P><P>Little Monsters should also look forward to the release of her <a href="/news/articles/1691226/lady-gaga-new-album-artpop.jhtml"><i>ARTPOP</i> album</a>. She announced the title just this month, via a tattoo, and the album is expected to drop in early 2013.</P><P><i>Share your thoughts on Gaga's perfume trailer in the comments!</i></P>

Why do people take their food so seriously?
In Denver, they threatened to kill me over soup.
They called me names that I can?t repeat in polite company, insulted my wife, my parents, threatened to come down to the office and kick my teeth in when I made a crack about sneaking a plastic bag full of grilled chicken into the vegetarian restaurant in order to make the limp, soggy vegan burritos fit for human consumption.
Granted, I was a restaurant critic and everyone wants to kill the restaurant critic now and then.
But there were nights when I was taking my life in my hands choosing between the momo and the iskender; in the obvious and wise decision to eat the mustard-spiked Carolina barbecue rather than the Texas brisket.
When I said something nasty about the chicken rice at the rattletrap strip mall joint with the buzzing, dust-fuzzed neon sign and the powerful smell of industrial cleaning products, I wasn?t just taking a shot at the food, but at Singapore in general, everyone who had ever lived there and the spirits of a million dead ancestors.
The coolest heads explained to me (as though I needed it explained) that chicken rice was the national dish of Singapore and that anyone with any taste at all must love it unreservedly, in any mutant form it took, because to do otherwise was to insult a billion years of Hainanese and Malaysian culinary history.
The sad, black heart of culinary jingoism is the knuckleheaded idea that none but those who are born to it can possibly appreciate the full, round expression of pelmeni or taco or stinky tofu.
Those less restrained simply said that it?d be smart of me to never walk alone in that restaurant?s neighborhood again. Because if I did, they would find me.
Cuisine as patriotism
What is it about food that brings out the rabid nationalism in people?
How is it that CNNGo was tabled in a Taiwan parliamentary committee hearing and received a protest visit after the site used Catholicism?s seven deadly sins to describe the seven best Asian cities for indulgence, with Taipei named as the best city for gluttony?
Also on CNNGo: Asia's most sinful cities
The fury over that rose high enough that government ministers were quoted in newspapers saying that the CNN staff needed to be ?educated? about Taiwanese cuisine and culture, when, from my perspective, they seemed to already have it down pat.
I mean, we?re talking about a city with 18 streets dedicated to nothing but food, where you can?t chuck a rock without hitting some sidewalk genius cooking up pork belly buns, night market sausages or deep-fried stinky tofu for the mobs of hungry people passing by.
Taipei is a city renowned for good food. In fact, its tourism and marketing campaigns belabor the point. It's not just a glutton?s city, but a glutton?s Nirvana.
Anyone who says different has obviously never witnessed the kind of human traffic jam that can be caused just by the smell of sheng jian bao in the pan.
But saying so -- just by talking about somebody else?s cuisine in anything but the most careful and undeniably gracious terms -- inspired a Taiwanese Information Office Minister to claim publicly that by using the word ?gluttonous,? CNN had damaged Taipei?s image in the global sphere. (Sidenote: nowhere in the original article was the word "gluttonous" used.)
More pronounced and vitriolic was the netizen reaction and wave of protest when, in a CNNGo iReport, a Texas resident said that he did not like century egg.
CNNGo was so moved by the wave of Chinese anger over this dislike of a dish that it issued an apology letter.

Burn my flag, fine, but don't you dare criticize my mother's wu gai soup
So what is it about food that does this?
Why can a dumpling or a meat pie -- more than a flag, more than an anthem -- cause otherwise rational and well adjusted people to go into paroxysms of rage and patriotism if someone dares to say anything against it?
Here's my take.
While an anthem may be stirring and a flag might flutter prettily in the breeze, neither tastes very good. Neither gets internalized, both literally and figuratively, the way food does.
To say something nasty, or even something perceived to be nasty, about a country?s food is to say something nasty about its mothers and grandmothers, about its most dearly held traditions and tenderest moments.
We celebrate with food. We mourn with food. We use food to mark both milestone events and plain old ordinary Tuesdays.
And to insult a beloved food is to insult all of this at once, not just the thing itself, but the emotional architecture that surrounds it as well.
And I understand the sentiment tied up in this. Honestly, I do.
There?s a counter-service cheeseburger joint five minutes' walk from the house where I grew up that I swear, against all better judgement, serves the second-best burger on the planet and I am perfectly happy to fight anyone who says different.
I feel this way because it is my cheeseburger joint, the one I grew up with, the one I miss when I am far away.
But the sad, black heart of culinary jingoism is the knuckleheaded idea that none but those who are born to it can possibly appreciate the full, round expression of pelmeni or taco or stinky tofu.
That common blood (and, presumably, passport ink) is the only sauce that can truly bring a dish into perfect focus.
And that, of course, is total rubbish. A lie clung to by those who honestly believe that latitude is the ultimate arbiter of authenticity and that love of food and love of place are the same thing.
But it is precisely this notion of ownership --my burger joint, their rundown chicken rice palace -- that is so maddening and that exists to hide so much of the good stuff from those easily scared away.
I don?t care if you were born in Moscow or New York or Singapore. You don?t own those dishes that sustained you.

No one owns homesickness and no one has the market cornered on the comforts of a national cuisine
There is no rule which says that just because you grew up eating carne asada every day, wrapped in handmade tortillas with the indents of your abuelita?s fingers still plain in the masa, you get to be Lord and Mayor of Taco Town.
You want rules? Here are some rules. No great cuisine ever got that way without being able to survive the glare and varied interpretation of international service. No cuisine ever got to grow without being irrevocably altered simply by its passage to some new place.
Also on CNNGo:6 foolproof rules for finding the best restaurants on the road
And while this should come as no surprise to anyone who has ever eaten their way beyond the neighborhood Olive Garden, it still bears saying -- no cuisine is pure.
Or above criticism. Even criticism by people who are -- gasp -- outsiders.
Just because someone doesn?t like the stinky tofu, it doesn?t mean they?re stupid or uncultured or racist. Most of the time it just means they don?t like the damn tofu.
We're all Iron Chefs
Who gets to decide who is the outsider anyway?
Setting aside any freakishly insular, super-regional culinary tradition which, somehow, might have skated untouched through all the immigration, emigration, wars, migrations, diasporas and cultural re-jiggings with which we hairless monkeys have amused ourselves for the past thousand years, there is not a single canon out there that hasn?t gone through multiple rounds of culinary miscegenation borne of strife, exodus or worse.
No matter how wonderful, the Vietnamese food you eat today in Los Angeles is not the same as the Vietnamese food eaten yesterday in Saigon.
But then, the Vietnamese food eaten yesterday in Saigon is also not the same as the stuff they ate the day before in Hanoi, or during the French occupation, or while the lords and ladies sat in Hue, or when the Chinese ruled the North.
I have spent most of my life eating Vietnamese food. I know it like I know the taste of my own teeth.
But never once have I eaten Vietnamese food -- get it? Though only because I do not yet have my own time machine.
So be proud of your dumplings, by all means. Love your stinky tofu, your chicken rice, your cheeseburgers, caviar and pie.
But remember in the same breath that no one owns homesickness and no one has the market cornered on the comforts of a national cuisine.
Every dish served in every restaurant everywhere must, first, stand on its own merits.
It must be worthy of being loved absent tradition, absent location, absent cultural fiat, because the greatest power of cuisine in this day and age is its ability to move not just those who were born to it, but those stepping through the door for the first time, too.
