2012 MTV Video Music Awards: The Nominations Are In!

Drake and Rihanna lead the pack with five nods each at the awards show, airing live on September 6 at 8 p.m. EST.

Following a year when both singers pushed the boundaries of their sound by mixing in even more dance and R&B flavor, the pair lead all nominees at this year's awards with five nods each.<div class="player-placeholder right" title="The 2012 Video Music Award Nominees Are..." id="vid:820732.id:1690828" width="415" height="255"></div>Rihanna, in fact, has two chances to take home the night's biggest prize, as she's up for Video of the Year for her solo hit "We Found Love" and her duet with Drizzy on his "Take Care." This year's show will air live on September 6 at 8 p.m. EST from the Staples Center in Los Angeles and feature performances from four-time VMA veteran Alicia Keys and VMA first-timers One Direction.Last year's big winner, Katy Perry, is not far behind with four nominations on a show that will also shine a light on the global EDM explosion with a Best Electronic Dance Music Video category featuring such bold-faced names as Avicii, Martin Solveig, Skrillex, Calvin Harris and Duck Sauce.Rihanna will also duke it out for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and possibly get on the board in a number of professional categories, including Best Choreography and Best Visual Effects.Drake's nominations include bids for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Male Video, as well as Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.<big><a href="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/vma/2012/categories.jhtml">What are you waiting for? What? You didn't know pizza was invented in Naples? Here's a crash course.

Arabic-inspired flatbreads had long been made in Naples, but chefs at Pizzeria Brandi felt that Queen Margherita's visit in 1889 called for something special: pizza dough topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella di bufala and basil.

When the royal court expressed enthusiastic approval of the new pizza recipe, it became thereafter known as pizza margherita.

Many Italians judge a pizzeria based on its pizza margherita, but if you want something different, there's the classic pizza alla napoletana, with anchovies, olives, pickles, capers and oregano.

Other Neapolitan pizzeria dishes include the ever-popular calzoni and panzerotti: deep-fried mozzarella pockets.�

Classic Neapolitan pasta dishes include seafood -- spaghetti alle vongole and risotto alla pescatora are typical.

Other famous local pasta recipes include pasta e patate (pasta and potato soup), timballo (pasta pie), gnocchi alla sorrentina (potato dumplings baked in tomato sauce and mozzarella) and pasta e fagioli.

Pastae fagioli (pasta and bean soup) is a classic dish found in mamma's kitchen throughout the boot, but the Neapolitan version -- called pasta fazool -- is made with hot pepper and crushed mixed pasta.

A variant of spaghetti alla puttanesca -- ?whore-style spaghetti? -- is also found in Naples. The Neapolitan version calls for tomatoes, garlic, parsley, hot pepper, capers and olives. Debate persists about where this seemingly innocent pasta dish got its scandalous name.

<a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/cyrus__miley/artist.jhtml">Miley Cyrus</a> appears to be the target of a 911 prank: According to reports, LAPD officers rushed to the singer's Los Angeles home Wednesday after someone called about a possible home invasion, but there was no home invasion and no sign of danger when they arrived.According to <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2012/08/01/miley-cyrus-swatting-home-invasion-lapd-false-alarm/" target="_blank">TMZ</a>, police received a call around 6:50 p.m. PT that someone had possibly broken into Cyrus' home and that there might have been shots fired. When the cops arrived, with their guns drawn, they found no one home and determined it was a false alarm.Now, law enforcement officials are saying the only crime committed was something known as "swatting," which is when a "911 abuser" attempts to trick law enforcement to dispatch units by calling in a serious crime. The prankster, officials add, can be charged with a crime and arrested in connection with the "swat." Additionally, if someone was hurt or killed in the process, those charges could become more serious.A spokesperson for the LAPD told <a href="http://www.gossipcop.com/miley-cyrus-home-invasion-prank-911-call-gunshots-swatting-police-cops-lapd-august-2012/" target="_blank">Gossip Cop</a>, "We believed there was a crime in progress." They are now investigating the matter to determine who placed the call.A rep for the singer/actress had not responded to MTV News' request for comment by press time. Sure, the band is playing in the clip, but as the music begins to reach the chorus, the bar-goers enjoying them give in to darker intentions, erupting in one epic, slow-motion food fight. As the clip ends, the band stands tall, surrounded by the destruction. Could their stoicism translate to a first-ever VMA win?Certainly two-time winner Justin Bieber hopes not. He's making his entry into the Best Pop Video category with his <a href="/news/articles/1684418/justin-bieber-boyfriend-video-cars-girls.jhtml">video for "Boyfriend."</a> Sure, the concept is pretty simple: Bieber on a roof with his pals, fast cars and one very pretty girl, but it's not the concept that makes it so special. It's seeing how much Bieber has matured from his "Baby" days that makes it so memorable.One Direction's beachy, light-hearted romp for their infectious Up All Night single "What Makes You Beautiful" sells the Brits as SoCal beachgoers looking to catch some rays and waves, and maybe even scout the sand for some hot girls. The sunny vibe of the clip perfectly matches the sugary track. Is it too sweet for a VMA victory? Or, could it be that it's just sweet enough to make their first-ever VMA trip a triumphant one?Maroon 5's <a href="/news/articles/1684822/maroon-5-wiz-khalifa-payphone-video-set.jhtml">"Payphone" video</a> has it all. In the span of just a few minutes, it has Adam Levine in a tank top, a bank heist gone wrong, fire, explosions, Wiz Khalifa and — the icing on the cake — forbidden love. In the end, Levine may not get the girl, but come VMA night he might get a big-time consolation prize: a Moonman.And then there's Rihanna's "We Found Love." Completely cinematic, the singer pulled out all the stops for this video, about two drug-addicted street punks who get higher off their destructive relationship than anything else. Read into what you will, but Perry certainly doesn't play coy with this one.Another girl with love troubles to work out on film is <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml/">Rihanna</a>. In her exploration of a love undone by <a href="/news/articles/1672801/rihanna-we-found-love-video.jhtml">substances and violence</a> , she shares the screen with British boxer/model Dudley O'Shaughnessy as the pair of gutter punks stumble their way through Belfast, Ireland in a haze of post-coital bliss, drug-fueled benders and physical altercations.There is no such angst in the body-painted video for <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/gotye/artist.jhtml">Gotye's</a> breakthrough hit, "Somebody That I Used to Know." In a nod to the low-concept efforts from MTV's early-1980's heyday, "Somebody" finds the mostly naked singer and equally exposed pal Kimbra blending into abstract background courtesy of geometrical shape body paint applied to match a piece of art created by Gotye's father, Frank de Backer.<a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/mia__4_/artist.jhtml">M.I.A.</a> hardly does anything that doesn't involve some political or social statement and the ghost-riding accompaniment to <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/02/03/mia-bad-girls-video-morocco/">"Bad Girls"</a> was no exception. In what appears to be a statement on the Saudi Arabian government's ban on female drivers, M.I.A. traveled to Morocco to film women in Arab garb getting behind the wheels and performing a type of stylized Middle Eastern form of drifting known as hagwalah.If <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/drake/artist.jhtml">Drake</a> is going to score some VOTY moon rock, he's gonna have to share it with Rihanna. The Young Money MC who isn't afraid to show his sensitive side made one of the best videos of his career with the maudlin, monochromatic "Take Care."Packed with expansive, icy landscapes, achingly tense slow-motion footage and artfully framed animals, the minimal clip doesn't really take you anywhere as it depicts the pair amid images of birds taking flight, bulls charging and a shower of arrows.But, somehow, at the end, after the pair shares a tender, sexually charged embrace and all that's left is burning trees and smoking earth, you feel exhausted and satisfied.Who will hop into a limo at night's end with the Video of the Year moonman? Shakira Unveils 'Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)'

Track is the official song of the 2010 World Cup and will benefit public health centers in Africa.

Fresh off her duet with Rascal Flatts frontman Gary LeVox on Wednesday night's <a href="/news/articles/1638032/shakiras-gypsy-gets-boost-from-rascal-flatts-on-american-idol.jhtml">"American Idol,"</a> Shakira has unveiled yet another collaboration ... this one set to take place on an even bigger stage (yes, that's actually possible).On her <a href="http://www.shakira.com/stream/article/display/id/403" target="_blank">official site</a>, she's just posted a track called "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)," which will serve as the official theme for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, set to kick off June 11 in South Africa.The track — a collabo between Shaki and South African Afro-fusion band Freshlyground — was co-produced by John Hill, who most recently produced a pair of songs from her 2009 album She Wolf. Like much of her work, it's a poly-sonic affair: According to a statement on her site, the chorus of the song borrows from a favorite Cameroonian marching chant that was popularized by the group Golden Voices.Shakira and Freshlyground will perform "Waka Waka" at the World Cup closing ceremonies, held before the final match on July 11 in Johannesburg Soccer City Stadium. The song will be available for download through digital retailers the week of May 11, and will also be included on Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album, set to be released the week of May 31 by Sony Music Entertainment. A Spanish-language version of the track will also be available.Proceeds from the sale of the album will benefit FIFA's "20 Centers for 2010" initiative, which aims to achieve positive social change through football (that's "soccer" to us Americans) by building 20 "Football for Hope" public health centers across Africa.In addition to her performance at the closing ceremonies, Shakira will also be one of the headline performers at the official FIFA World Cup Kick-off Celebration Concert on June 10, broadcast from Orlando Stadium in Soweto/Johannesburg South Africa. A video for "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" is also set to debut in mid-May.

Proposed changes to airport/airline policies -- anything air travel, really -- incite strong opinions.�

This week, a story on a "pay as you weigh" scheme for airlines proposed by an economist in Norway drew heated reactions from around the world.�

The controversial paper outlines three different models for calculating air tickets based on passengers' weight.

Published on Tuesday,�Airline 'fat tax': Should heavy passengers pay more? received more than 2,200 comments in less than 24 hours.

While airlines and air travel bodies were unresponsive or slow to react to the concept, CNN users didn't hold back. The more sensible responses ranged from hearty approval for the economic principles behind the idea, to outrage over a potentially discriminatory policy, to suggestions on promoting healthier eating.

"I agree with this. If one's weight incurs extra costs for the airline they should pay for it. I also think that if total weight is taken into account from the beginning and paid for then it will dissuade people from trying to bring huge suitcases on as carry-ons, freeing up space for everyone to place something in the overhead compartment, thus speeding up the boarding process, thus reducing flight delays," commented Nick Reynolds. �

Some users rightly pointed out that the proposed scheme would charge higher fees for not just overweight travelers but those who may be tall and naturally heavier.

"I'll be willing to bet that not a single person arguing this is acceptable is a bit over average in height or weight. For those of us who are over average, even if we are not fat, this feels inescapably like discrimination," wrote "gulwhiz."

@AbdMohsenAlmogrn: I think it is unfair. Some passengers are slim and some of them are young. Also, generally women weigh less than men, so they are less affected by such decision.Others found the idea of weighing passengers ridiculous and offensive.

Some readers argued that the current system is actually discriminatory.�

"It isn't discrimination, it's physics. The thrust of the article is, that there is a pound per mile cost that is unavoidable. Thus shipping one passenger's oversized package should not be collectively paid for by others. In other words, far from discrimination, everyone will then have to pay their fair share. Frankly, there is conversely discrimination with the current system as it historically unfairly favors those who carry more weight onto the plane but had paid less per pound transported. In essence it would be righting a wrong," injected Ralphrepo.�

One reader, seabass, agreed with the principles, but voiced skepticism about how this would actually be implemented at an airport.�

"For argument sake, let's say that the fly by weight is implemented. How do you propose to get the accurate weight of the person? Wait in line at the airport to get weighted and entertaining yourself while a person at the front of the queue disagrees (with) the weight from the machine for 45 minutes? Arguing with the check-in desk because their cash account is $10 short and try to get a refund because the airline refuse (to) fly them? There are so many scenarios that would cause significant delays," wrote seabass.�

More delays in a world where passengers have to throw away water bottles while in line to remove our shoes on cold dirty floors, get X-rayed and possibly patted down?

Shakira Goes 'Loca' In New Guerrilla-Style Video

The Colombian star roller-skates, hip-shakes and fountain-dives for crazy clip.

For nearly two decades now, either due to her multinational leanings (the Colombian's music is as indebted to Latin American rhythms as it is to Arabic dance, Euro disco and red-white-and-blue rock) or because she is sort of insane (see last year's <a href="/news/articles/1626493/shakiras-wolf-global-pop-wolf-inside-us-all.jhtml">She Wolf album</a>), Shakira has managed to carve out her own, rather indefinable niche in pop music.<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Shakira's 'Loca' Music Video Premiere" id="id:1648976" width="240" height="211"></div>On Wednesday (September 29), she premiered the video for "Loca," the first single off her upcoming Sale el Sol album (due October 19). And while it's not exactly a unique artistic endeavor — it echoes sentiments already expressed by the likes of <a href="/news/articles/1635155/matt-kim-call-erykah-badus-nude-window-seat-video-more-than-just-shock-value.jhtml">Matt & Kim (in their "Lessons Learned" clip)</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1634940/erykah-badu-explains-nudity-window-seat-video.jhtml">Erykah Badu</a> (in her firestormy "Window Seat" vid) — it's still undoubtedly her ... mostly because none of her high-gloss pop contemporaries would ever dare attempt something like it.Shot run-and-gun style in Barcelona, "Loca" follows Shakira and her crew — which includes a few cameramen and, somewhat improbably, British rapper Dizzee Rascal — on a madcap adventure that includes roller-skating, public wardrobe changes, motorcycle cruising, an illicit hop in a public fountain (a move that landed her in hot, uh, water with <a href="http://www.barcelonareporter.com/index.php?/news/comments/shakira_loca_in_barcelona_sale_el_sol_-_the_sun_comes_out_released_on_octob/" target="_blank">local authorities</a>) and, of course, plenty of hip shaking. It's a decidedly guerrilla endeavor that appears to have been done on a budget hovering around zero (aside from a performance scene, the entire thing appears to have been shot on handheld cameras). The Britneys, Beyoncés and Gagas would probably never make something like this ... and yet, here it works, mostly because, well, it just sort of seems like the kind of thing Shakira would do.For that alone, she deserves to be praised. Because unlike Matt & Kim (or Erykah Badu, really), Shakira has plenty to lose. Her albums are big events, things that resonate across continents, and it would be rather easy (or, at least, expected) for her to come out of the gate with a big-budget, glossy pop video. Instead, we get "Loca," which is none of those things, and is probably better because of that.And though it features some near-nudity and some illegal activity, the thing that resonates most about the "Loca" video is that none of that bad behavior is played up for shock value. Instead, it all helps match the kinetic, herky-jerky energy of the song itself. "Loca" is the rare video that doesn't attempt to outshine the song it's based on. Instead, it complements it. This is a very lively song, after all, so what better way to capture that than with a very lively video?There's a calculated madness to the "Loca" video, a vibrant, unchained energy, the kind very few artists can conjure up, no matter how big the budget. And, come to think of it, that's a pretty accurate way of summing up Shakira's entire career. It's called synergy, people.What do you think of Shakira's "Loca" video? And the well-wishes keep pouring in for the couple, who met <a href="/news/articles/1686727/miley-cyrus-liam-hemsworth-engaged-timeline.jhtml">three years ago</a> on the set of "The Last Song.""[Miley's] one of the coolest people," Bret Michaels, who recorded the duet "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" with the singer, told <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/marc_malkin/miley_cyrus_engagement_congratulations/322419#ixzz1xUYysEhe" target="_blank">E! News</a>. "She's a very talented person and I shout out a mega congratulations to her."<div class="player-placeholder right" title="Liam Hemsworth Gives Miley Cyrus Blessing To See 'Hunger Games'" id="vid:751077" width="415" height="255"></div>And from what Michaels said, her groom-to-be is another pretty cool person. "I took him on an insane ride in the Bentley," Michaels recalled. "I took him in the car and we whipped up and down the [Sunset] strip very fast ... Liam and I took the car out and raced hell ... You can tell he rocks and he's a good dude."But the love doesn't end there. Cyrus and Hemsworth's co-star in "The Last Song," Kelly Preston, also has love for the soon-to-be-married pair. "Miley's like a second daughter and there's no one more perfect for her! I love Liam!" she <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/kelly_preston_so_happy_second_daughter/322103#ixzz1xUZefPE4" target="_blank">said</a>, adding that she is "so happy" for the couple."Rock of Ages" director Adam Shankman also witnessed their love bloom on the set of the film when he was a producer for the Nicholas Sparks big-screen adaptation. "I sort of want a finder's fee for Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. I cannot tell you. It made me cry," he told <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20602839,00.html" target="_blank">People.com</a>, adding that their chemistry was pretty immediate."I remember that first day of shooting when they first kissed and Miley walked by my sister [producer Jennifer Gibgot] after they shot the kissing scene," he said. "She goes, 'This is gonna work.' I'll tell you what's so great. That thing about opposites attract. Their fundamental core values are the same, but he's really mellow and she's really hyper. So it really works together."Sure, they haven't even walked down the aisle yet, but Shankman is already thinking about Miley/Liam 2.0. "It's extraordinary, and I'm so happy," he said.
