Campaign aims to bring African militia leader Joseph Kony to justice for war crimes and for enlisting children as soldiers.
By Gil Kaufman
<P>A campaign to stop the nearly 30-year, brutal rule of African militia leader Joseph Kony became a viral sensation this week. <a href="http://kony2012.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com" target="_blank">"Kony 2012,"</a> started by the group Invisible Children, aims to make Kony's face so famous that authorities will finally be able to arrest him and try him for his crimes. </P><P> </P><P>A 30-minute <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc" target="_blank">documentary</a> released on Monday is one of the keys to the campaign, and as of Thursday it had gotten more than 26 million views. The video details the atrocities carried out by Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army. The campaign appears to be working, as at one point on Wednesday, Invisible Children and #stopkony were trending higher on Twitter than Peyton Manning or the new iPad. </P><P> </P><P>Since 1987, human rights officials say Kony has forcefully abducted more than 60,000 children to be soldiers in his army and reportedly raped, mutilated and killed civilians in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan and displaced more than 2 million people. The leader is wanted for committing atrocities by the International Criminal Court and is being hunted down by 100 U.S. Special Forces advisers and local troops in four Central African nations, according to the <a href="http://bit.ly/AyrDyz"><I>Associated Press.</I></a> </P><P> </P><P>Kony 2012 is an effort to capture Kony and disarm the LRA before a reported window of opportunity closes. One way it plans to do that is by encouraging users to directly message a variety of stars to make use of their Twitter ubiquity to get the word out. Among those listed on the site are: Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Angelina Jolie, Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Jay-Z, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Ryan Seacrest and Ellen DeGeneres, along with a number of major policymakers. </P><P> </P><P>When users click on the celebs' photos, a tweet pops up that reads: Help us end #LRA violence. As it did in last year?s Flip Flop Report, Germany outranked all other free-spirited nations in the enjoyment of public nudity.
Some 17% of Germans have sunbathed naked on a public beach.
The French are the least likely Europeans to go topless or nude at the beach.
Americans (8%) are about half as likely to have sunbathed topless as Canadians (15%).
Globally speaking, Indians, South Koreans, Malaysians, Singaporeans and Japanese are the least comfortable with nudity at the beach.
The study measures global tolerance of that most infamous of tiny triangular swimsuits.
Only half of U.S. beachgoers consider "Speedos/Speedo-like swimwear" to be acceptable beachwear.
Don?t even think about strapping on one in Japan or Norway, where respectively only 29% and 34% of respondents recognize Speedos as appropriate.
The French have the highest tolerance for Speedo devotees (91%).

While the flavors are familiar, the cuisine at Yu?s Family Kitchen in Chengdu, Sichuan, is anything but common or safe.
Even the chef?s simplest dish, a seemingly uncomplicated steamed red bean bun, is artistically pricked with shears, transforming it into an edible hedgehog.
Artistic details like these have propelled Yu's to the top of Chengdu's "must dine" lists -- and lend considerable clout to claims the Sichuan city is one of the hottest culinary destinations on the planet right now.
In 2010, Chengdubecame the first city in Asia and the second in the world to be named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. (The first, in 2005, was Popayan in Colombia.)
Among many enticing restaurants in Chengdu, chef Yu Bo?s Yu?s Family Kitchen is without doubt the most exciting.
A Sichuan native, Yu dedicated 10 years of meticulous study to the art of cooking spicy and classic Sichuan cuisine under traditional chefs.
He ventured off on his own in 2006, opening Yu?s Family Kitchen with his wife in one of the city?s restored Zhai alleyways in the heart of Chengdu.
Since its inception, Yu and his restaurant have won praise both at home and abroad for culinary dexterity and exceptional creativity.
He?s garnered accolades from foreign experts on Chinese food such as Fuchsia Dunlop, as well as visits from the likes of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.
He teaches diners there's more to Sichuan cuisine than mapo tofu ?- though his play on the traditional dish is superb ?- and invites them to discover the cuisine of his home through the eyes of a detailed and thoughtful artist.
More on CNN: Chengdu, Asia's first City of Gastronomy
Four of us gathered for lunch at a large round table at Yu?s Family Kitchen on a recent sunny Chengdu afternoon.
The restaurant is set in a traditional Sichuan lane house.
Meals are served in the usual Chinese banquet style.
But the experience is anything but traditional.
Reservations are required. Not because the restaurant is booked solid every meal, but because that's when diners decide how much they want to spend, discover what seasonal ingredients are available and inform the staff of dietary restrictions.
Once we arrived at the restaurant, no menus were presented.
Instead, with careful precision, the hostess placed a mosaic of 16 cold appetizers before us.
Cold dishes (liang cai) are conventional precursor to nearly every meal in China. Many of Yu's are creatively crafted, like the hand-tied piece of lettuce.
?Traditions are made not to be broken nor kept," says Yu.
"I use traditional methods and styles as the foundation on which I build the rest of my house. I don?t trade past experiences for new ones; I create new experiences with traditional ones.?
Instead of breaking with Chengdu's culinary traditions, Yu refines them.
After our 16 starters -- which represent the 16 additional courses to arrive later -- we were offered three seemingly simple dishes of hand-shredded duck, a sesame and chili oil rabbit and a spice-rubbed chicken.
Incredibly executed, these dishes shined not because of their creativity, but because of Yu?s careful consideration in obtaining ingredients.
The fowl was completely free-range and the MSG -- an often feared and misunderstood hallmark of Asian cuisine -- is made in-house using only organic ingredients.
?It?s nearly impossible to source 100% traceable, environmentally sound and organic products all the time in China,? laments Yu.
?But I try my best to obtain them. That?s why almost no two meals at my restaurant are the same. Ingredients change daily based on availability.?
Yu?s commitment to responsibly sourcing free-range and organic produce should be applauded, but it's his ability to re-introduce Chinese traditions that should really be celebrated.
His creativity is best witnessed in his marriage of two iconic Chinese symbols: calligraphy and dumplings.
He takes something as simple as a dumpling and transforms it into a piece of art, nearly too exquisite to eat.
Instead of enveloping minced pork into a typical doughy wrapper, he creates floss from the dough, spins it onto the end of a wooden handle, and cleverly hides the free range Tibetan ground pork within the threads of floss.
The result is an edible calligraphy brush best served dipped in its ink -- either a tomato dipping sauce or pungent black vinegar.
Equally impressive is Yu?s ability to recreate a classic Sichuan mapo tofu experience without using a single cube of tofu.
In place of tofu, he simmers cubed jelly noodles in a pungent huajiao (Sichuan peppercorn) broth to create a traditional Chinese medicinal concoction as savory as it is healthful.

?I want to inspire creativity in Chinese kitchens,? Yu says.
?I think that is really lacking here. Chinese chefs often get stuck with the recipes that have been handed down to them generation to generation and they don?t possess any discipline.
"Some of those traditional recipes may be great, but they need new life breathed into them and a focused chef. But a lot of chefs play safe.?
The price of his creative cuisine is reasonable. The four of us paidjust under RMB 250 ($40) per person for our four-hour, 16-course meal, though the restaurant will try to accommodate most budgets.

'She had been tweeted by her fans en masse, saying you're in this video,' Jedidiah Jenkins of Invisible Children organization tells MTV News.
By Jacob Soboroff
<P>At noon Pacific time last Monday, Jedidiah Jenkins, a member of the nonprofit organization <a href="http://act.mtv.com/posts/how-invisible-children-made-kony2012-the-internets-biggest-anti-hero-in-one-day/" target="_blank">Invisible Children's inner circle</a>, saw the group's 278th YouTube video uploaded and wasn't sure what to expect. Jenkins had written the script to the film, the 30-minute documentary <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc" target="_blank">"Kony 2012,"</a> about the Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony, and it had been a grind. </P><P> </P><P>"It was really the hardest movie we've ever made" in the nearly decade-long history of the group, he told MTV News in a phone interview from Los Angeles. </P><P> </P><P>The film is now the most viral video ever, with more than 70 million views on YouTube alone in the video's first six days thanks in no small part to an army of young supporters who flexed their power by using social media to drive celebrities and friends to watch and share the video. </P><P> </P><P>Creating online content and distributing it with social media was <a href="http://act.mtv.com/posts/how-invisible-children-made-kony2012-the-internets-biggest-anti-hero-in-one-day/">nothing new for Invisible Children</a> — the group already had 450,000 Facebook friends the night before the video was posted and they've used YouTube to share videos about their cause since 2006 — but the way this video spread was something the group could never have planned. </P><P> </P><P>Jenkins said the group posted the video at noon on Monday and that evening hosted a screening at Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles with celebrities Kristen Bell and Jason Bateman, who took to Twitter at 9:42 p.m., immediately after watching the film. </P><P> </P><P>"We had a strategy to screen it at CAA with the few celebrities we know, get them in the room, make them watch it," Jenkins said. Within the 24 hours that followed, celebrities including comedian Kelly Oxford, Ryan Seacrest, Diddy, Justin Bieber, Oprah and Steve Carrell had tweeted about the video after being notified about it by their fans thanks to a call-to-action in the documentary. Soon enough, Jenkins' phone was ringing off the hook, including a call from <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml">Rihanna</a>. </P><P> </P><P>"She had been tweeted by her fans en masse, saying you're in this video," Jenkins recalled. "She just kind of responded and clicked on the link that one of her fans followed. It blew her mind. She tweeted it immediately. One of her music video directors, Anthony Mandler, actually went to Uganda with me to see our programs on the ground in November. Anthony texted her. They conference called me at 11 at night and I missed the call twice, because I was at a late dinner. Three calls in a row means it's an emergency," so Jenkins picked up. </P><P> </P><P>"Anthony said, 'Jed, I have Rihanna on the line. She wants to talk to you.' " Jenkins continued. He recalled the 24-year-old singer saying, "I've never been moved like this, I've never been involved. I want to go big. I want to get involved. I want this to be my thing and I want to blow this up. I want to get kids involved. I'm just responding to my fans. They're so moved by this." </P><P> </P><P>Wherever you land in the debate over the organization's tactics and the film's accuracy, "Kony 2012" is undeniably a social media phenomenon made possible by support from celebrities encouraged to get involved by their young fans. Even CNN's Piers Morgan admitted he first heard about the movement from his 14-year-old son. </P><P> </P><P>As of press time, Invisible Children has nearly 3 million likes on Facebook, and the question remains: What's next for this enormous group of engaged and active young people when so many of their peers are apathetic? Jenkins said the group is considering participating in a voter-registration drive as the 2012 election approaches. But he admitted that first he and his colleagues have to get caught up. </P><P> </P><P>"We couldn't have ever, ever imagined that this would be the fastest viral movement in history," he said. "We are dealing with an unprecedented amount of attention. It's a huge amount of responsibility. It's exhausting. We're excited for the challenge, but it's intimidating too."</p>
