Where did all the glamor go?
It's a common lament, the passing of the supposed glory days of air travel: when men were Mad Men, women were air hostesses in short, chic uniforms and the latter served the former full four-course meals, complete with proper cutlery and glassware, mid-air.
More: Do sexy flight attendants really sell more seats?
Now flying -- for those who can't afford first class, anyway -- has been reduced to what Michael O'Leary, boss of Ryanair, proclaims it's always been: getting about in a "big bus with wings."
Just when we were coming to terms with the disillusionment, along comes a book that positively wallows in that better-dressed air travel world of yore.
"Airline: Style at 30,000 feet," by Keith Lovegrove, picks over every aspect of flying culture, from dress through advertising, cuisine and interior design, from early days of commercial flight, in the 1920s, on.
One thing that becomes clear is how sexualized an environment this "parallel universe" in the air, as the book puts it, was -- at least in the long and increasingly liberated decades after World War II.
More: 9 easy ways to drive a flight attendant insane
One shot, among those from the book selected in the gallery above, shows the shorts that Southwest Airlines wedges its stewardesses into in the 1970s.
No doubt some would call that sexualized environment just sexist.
Southwest's male bosses said at the time: "The girls must be able to wear kinky leather boots and hot pants or they don't get the job."
Either way, one of those 1970s flights would be a shock to anyone who's taken a Ryanair flight recently.

'That way our fans can come together,' she tells Ryan Seacrest of motivation for controversial remixes with her ex.
By Jocelyn Vena
<P>Three weeks after Rihanna dropped her much-debated <a href="/news/articles/1679614/rihanna-chris-brown-collaboration-reactions.jhtml">"Birthday Cake" remix</a> featuring Chris Brown, the singer is finally commenting on why she decided to work with her ex-boyfriend. Rihanna and Brown also collaborated on a remix of his "Turn Up the Music," which was released on the same day last month. </P><P> </P><P>"The first song that came about was 'Birthday Cake.' ... We ended up recording [the two songs] at the same time and executing them together," she explained on Ryan Seacrest's radio show Thursday morning (March 15). "But I reached out to [Brown] about doing 'Birthday Cake' because that's the only person that, really, it made sense to do the record. </P><P> </P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:736002/cp~vid%3D736002%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A736002" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center> </P><P> </P><P>"Just as a musician, despite everything else, that was going to be the person," she said, referring to Brown's 2009 assault on her, which ended their relationship. "You know, I thought about rappers, and I've done that so many times, and the hottest R&B artist out right now is Chris Brown. So I wanted him on the track and then in turn he was like, 'Why don't you do the remix to my track?' and it was a trade-off." </P><P> </P><P>The ex-couple have also had fans buzzing in the last few months over rumors that they have been dating again, despite Brown's romantic relationship with aspiring model Karrueche Tran. </P><P> </P><P>"We did two records — one for my fans, one for his fans — and that way our fans can come together," Rihanna explained. "There shouldn't be a divide, you know? It's music and it's innocent." </P><P> </P><P>The interview is the first time she has commented publicly about the controversial remixes. However, <a href="/news/articles/1679712/rihanna-chris-brown-birthday-cake-the-dream.jhtml">"Birthday Cake" co-producer/writer The-Dream</a> recently stopped by MTV News' "RapFix Live" and opened up about the track. </P><P> </P><P>"The same questions that went through my mind, and I'm an artist also, had to have gone through hers," The-Dream recalled of hearing Rihanna's remix idea. "When she raised the question to me, I know she's not crazy. So my thought was, 'You've been thinking about this, you've already thought it out, so evidently you know what reaction you gonna get.' </P><P> </P><P>Dream added of Rihanna and Chris' troubled history, "Everybody knows what took place, cool. Have the power to really forgive if that's what it is. If not, stay on that side of the fence from the beginning." </P><P> </P><P><i>What do you think of Rihanna's comments on the "Cake" remix with Chris Brown? Michael Lynche and Casey James join her in the bottom three.

<P>It's getting to that point in season nine of "American Idol" when it gets hard to guess who will go home every week because the competition has gotten so tight. But a night after Simon Cowell compared her tortured screaming to the sound of a woman giving birth, America decided that it wasn't quite ready for an "Idol" champ as quirky as tattooed glassblower Siobhan Magnus. </P><P> </P><P>After charming the judges and voting public with her offbeat style sense, powerhouse vocals and sometimes sassy backtalk to the judges, Magnus' luck ran out after she closed Tuesday's show with an all-over-the-place take on <a href="/news/articles/1637939/siobhan-magnus-wins-the-judges-back-with-any-man-of-mine.jhtml">Shania Twain's "Any Man of Mine."</a> </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder" id="id:1632717"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>Magnus was given the boot on a night that was packed with performances from <a href="/news/articles/1638032/shakiras-gypsy-gets-a-boost-from-rascal-flatts-on-american-idol.jhtml">Rascal Flatts, Shakira</a> and Lady Antebellum, and her exit came after more than 33 million votes were lodged Tuesday. </P><P> </P><P>The results began with host Ryan Seacrest creating three groups of two. The first pairing included Magnus and Lee Dewyze, followed by Casey James and Michael Lynche and then Aaron Kelly and Crystal Bowersox. Cutting the tension immediately, Seacrest walked Magnus across the stage for her first trip to the bottom three, alongside Lynche and James. </P><P> </P><P>The first singer sent back to safety was <a href="/news/articles/1635660/american-idol-judges-save-michael-lynche.jhtml">Lynche, who dodged a bullet for the second time</a> this season. "Tonight is different because everyone did well last night, so there's no shame in the bottom three," he said before being sent back to the couches. With James safe, that left the woman Seacrest called an "independent spirit" standing center stage in her salmon-colored miniskirt-and-tank-top combo. </P><P> </P><P>Saying she tried out for the show for her little sisters, Magnus hoped that she had a big impact on them. "I did my best, and I hope that I was able to show them what we're all capable of," she said, clearly holding back some emotion. </P><P> </P><P>Keeping her composure, Magnus went out with a typically sassy run through Aretha Franklin's "Think," which got the final five and the whole audience on their feet and clapping along. It ended, of course, with one of her signature ear-piercing screams and then some hugs for her family, who told her, "You're still our star." </P><P> </P><P>This being a country-themed week, the show kicked off with a live performance from twangy trio Rascal Flatts, who played their cowboy-pop ditty "Unstoppable." Along with the usual time-killing Ford video and some other promotional shenanigans, the first half of the show also featured season-four "Idol" superstar Carrie Underwood flying in from her national tour just to introduce her current opening act, the <a href="/news/articles/1638035/sons-of-sylvia-from-next-great-american-band-to-american-idol.jhtml">little-known brotherly band Sons of Sylvia</a>. </P><P> </P><P>Bringing a harder-edge, new-wave country vibe than they displayed during their winning run last year on "The Next Great America Band," the all-black-clad Clark brothers played their debut single, "Love Left to Lose." The tune mixed straightforward radio rock with country touches, including fiddle, mandolin and rocked-out resonator guitar over a thudding backbeat. </P><P> </P><P>With a whole hour to fill, the next break featured <a href="/news/articles/1637933/lady-antebellum-honored-to-perform-on-american-idol.jhtml">ACM winners Lady Antebellum</a> performing their triple-platinum smash "Need You Now." The Fleetwood Mac-like ballad of romantic longing that has helped propel the album of the same name to the best sales figures of any 2010 release found singers Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott trading off yearning vocals as third member Dave Haywood played along on a grand piano in the background. </P><P> </P><P>The night's final performance was a truly odd combo, as hip-shaker Shakira was joined by Flatts for the spare belly-dance/ boot-scooter "Gypsy," which she opened by showing off her harmonica skills. Joined by two dancers, Shakira worked her flowing red skirt and swiveled her hips as she melded her yodely vocals with the high, lonesome sound of Flatts' Gary LeVox. </P><P> </P><P>Next week's mentor will be Harry Connick Jr., who will lead the finalists through the songbook of Frank Sinatra. </P><P> </P><P><I>What did you think of tonight's elimination? Did Siobhan deserve to go home? Ford W. Bell, president,American Alliance of Museums, answers our questions about the roles of museums and their relevance today.
?CNN: What roles should museums today fulfill?
Bell: At their core, museums are educational institutions, as essential to our communities as schools, libraries and utilities.
Museums annually invest more than $2 billion in education programs each year, serving ?pre-K-through-life,? as we like to say.
Museums in this country welcome some 90 million schoolchildren each year, and these students are not on the field trip as you and I understand them. Today, these field trips are extensions of the classroom.
Museums have adapted to the strictures of No Child Left Behind, and in fact in some states museums are taking the lead in writing the state standards for education.
All told, American museums provide 18 million instructional hours to K-12 students in America, and are invaluable to homeschooled children.
Museums are also economic engines for communities large and small. One statistic I never tire of citing has been cited by the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
They say that, for every $1 a municipality invests in cultural organizations, including museums, $7 are returned to the public coffers. That?s a return that would make Warren Buffett swoon.
Museums are also a big part of the cultural tourism industry in this country -- a $192 billion industry.
And studies show that cultural tourists spend more and stay longer than other tourists. Three exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last fall and spring generated more than $700 million in economic activity for the city. That?s astounding.
But today museums are doing much, much more.
Museums are committed to public service, and many museums are filling the social service gaps created by the recent economic downturn.
Museums of various types are providing programs to children on the autism spectrum, to Alzheimer?s patients and their caregivers, to veterans with traumatic injuries.
Museums also offer English as a Second Language courses for new arrivals, free computer training to those needing to upgrade their job skills, and some truly visionary museums connect with underserved communities, working with families caught up in the juvenile justice system, and providing parenting classes to young mothers.
Museums view this as keeping with their shared mantra of public service.
CNN: How best do you think museums should achieve those aims?
Bell: Museums need to become part of the social fabric of the community.
They need to become community assets, and most are doing so, through innovative efforts like those described above.
CNN: What is the risk that museums today are simply acting as 'collectors of stuff' -- and how can it be avoided?
Bell: Obviously, museums are much more than mere collectors. For instance, many museums are leading research institutions.
And those with living collections zoos, aquariums, gardens are leading the way in conservation efforts and conservation research.
But do not underestimate the value of collecting things.
Museums hold more than 1 billion objects, and together these constitute our shared heritages cultural, historic, scientific, natural.
As the keepers, protectors, interpreters and exhibitors of these heritages, museums play an essential role.
When times are difficult, people return to their museums. For instance, we saw a big spike in attendance after 9/11. People want to re-connect with what they value.
In recent years, museums are playing perhaps an even more essential role, but one that is less tangible. In an increasingly virtual world, museums are among the last bastions of authenticity.
All of us -- particularly the young -- are awash in all things virtual. But studies show that all of us -- again, especially the young -- crave the authentic. That is priceless.
CNN: Do you think there is a conservatism within American museums that stops them extending their roles into new areas?
Bell: As I?ve mentioned, I think museums are already extending their roles. The only element of conservatism comes from financial prudence.
Since the Great Recession, our studies show that fully two-thirds of museums have reported financial stress.
Many have been forced to cut staff, hours and programs. At the height of the downturn, even the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Getty -- arguably the two richest museums in the country -- cut their staffs.
Further, museums stepping into the social service gap comes at a time when government support for museums is declining, from all levels of government.
CNN: How many people are visiting museums these days and how has that changed over the last few years?
Bell: Our studies over the last four years show museum attendance has been increasing. This is common when times get tough.
When times are difficult, people return to their museums. For instance, we saw a big spike in attendance after 9/11. People want to re-connect with what they value.
The Alliance and the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services estimate that there are 850 million annual museum visits in the US that?s more than the attendance at all major league sporting events combined.
The Smithsonian alone attracts more than 30 million visitors annually.
This is a question of value. Not only are museums an educational, enlightening experience, but they are affordable.
The median price of admission to a US museum is just $7; compare that to a baseball game or theme park ticket. And 37% of US museums are free, while 92% have free days.
CNN: Which are the most popular or successful museums in America, and what do they do that allows them to succeed?
Bell: Science centers and children?s museums are immensely popular, and organizations like the San Diego Zoo and the National Aquarium in Baltimore really connect with visitors.
But many small to mid-size museums also succeed to forging those community bonds that make their communities no more likely to entertain the museum going away as they would doing away with their schools.

The Colombian star roller-skates, hip-shakes and fountain-dives for crazy clip.
By James Montgomery
<P>For nearly two decades now, either due to her multinational leanings (the Colombian's music is as indebted to Latin American rhythms as it is to Arabic dance, Euro disco and red-white-and-blue rock) or because she is sort of insane (see last year's <a href="/news/articles/1626493/shakiras-she-wolf-global-pop-for-the-wolf-inside-us-all.jhtml"><i>She Wolf</i> album</a>), Shakira has managed to carve out her own, rather indefinable niche in pop music. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Shakira's 'Loca' Music Video Premiere" id="id:1648976" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>On Wednesday (September 29), she premiered the video for "Loca," the first single off her upcoming <i>Sale el Sol</i> album (due October 19). And while it's not exactly a unique artistic endeavor — it echoes sentiments already expressed by the likes of <a href="/news/articles/1635155/matt-and-kim-call-erykah-badus-nude-window-seat-video-more-than-just-shock-value.jhtml">Matt & Kim (in their "Lessons Learned" clip)</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1634940/erykah-badu-explains-nudity-in-window-seat-video.jhtml">Erykah Badu</a> (in her firestormy "Window Seat" vid) — it's still undoubtedly her ... mostly because none of her high-gloss pop contemporaries would ever dare attempt something like it. </P><P> </P><P>Shot run-and-gun style in Barcelona, "Loca" follows Shakira and her crew — which includes a few cameramen and, somewhat improbably, British rapper Dizzee Rascal — on a madcap adventure that includes roller-skating, public wardrobe changes, motorcycle cruising, an illicit hop in a public fountain (a move that landed her in hot, uh, water with <a href="http://www.barcelonareporter.com/index.php?/news/comments/shakira_loca_in_barcelona_sale_el_sol_-_the_sun_comes_out_released_on_octob/" target="_blank">local authorities</a>) and, of course, plenty of hip shaking. It's a decidedly guerrilla endeavor that appears to have been done on a budget hovering around zero (aside from a performance scene, the entire thing appears to have been shot on handheld cameras). The Britneys, Beyoncés and Gagas would probably never make something like this ... and yet, here it <i>works,</i> mostly because, well, it just sort of seems like the kind of thing Shakira would do. </P><P> </P><P>For that alone, she deserves to be praised. Because unlike Matt & Kim (or Erykah Badu, really), Shakira has plenty to lose. Her albums are big events, things that resonate across continents, and it would be rather easy (or, at least, expected) for her to come out of the gate with a big-budget, glossy pop video. Instead, we get "Loca," which is none of those things, and is probably better because of that. </P><P> </P><P>And though it features some near-nudity and some illegal activity, the thing that resonates most about the "Loca" video is that none of that bad behavior is played up for shock value. Instead, it all helps match the kinetic, herky-jerky energy of the song itself. "Loca" is the rare video that doesn't attempt to outshine the song it's based on. Instead, it complements it. This is a very lively song, after all, so what better way to capture that than with a very lively video? </P><P> </P><P>There's a calculated madness to the "Loca" video, a vibrant, unchained energy, the kind very few artists can conjure up, no matter how big the budget. And, come to think of it, that's a pretty accurate way of summing up Shakira's entire career. It's called synergy, people. </P><P> </P><P><i>What do you think of Shakira's "Loca" video? Share your reviews in the comments.</i></p>

Track is the official song of the 2010 World Cup and will benefit public health centers in Africa.
By James Montgomery
<P>Fresh off her duet with Rascal Flatts frontman Gary LeVox on Wednesday night's <a href="/news/articles/1638032/shakiras-gypsy-gets-a-boost-from-rascal-flatts-on-american-idol.jhtml">"American Idol,"</a> Shakira has unveiled yet <i>another</i> collaboration ... this one set to take place on an even bigger stage (yes, that's actually possible). </P><P> </P><P>On her <a href="http://www.shakira.com/stream/article/display/id/403" target="_blank">official site</a>, she's just posted a track called "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)," which will serve as the official theme for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, set to kick off June 11 in South Africa. </P><P> </P><P>The track — a collabo between Shaki and South African Afro-fusion band Freshlyground — was co-produced by John Hill, who most recently produced a pair of songs from her 2009 album <i>She Wolf.</i> Like much of her work, it's a poly-sonic affair: According to a statement on her site, the chorus of the song borrows from a favorite Cameroonian marching chant that was popularized by the group Golden Voices. </P><P> </P><P>Shakira and Freshlyground will perform "Waka Waka" at the World Cup closing ceremonies, held before the final match on July 11 in Johannesburg Soccer City Stadium. 'That way our fans can come together,' she tells Ryan Seacrest of motivation for controversial remixes with her ex.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml">Rihanna</a> has always been pretty fierce, and for her "Battleship" poster, the femme fatale is getting her action hero on. </P><P> </P><P>Posted on <a href="http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00048397.html" target="_blank">Aceshowbiz.com</a>, the poster features a tatted-up Rihanna holding a machine gun, her cropped black hair under a hat. ?At first glance, Beijing doesn't seem like the kind of place one would go in search of the uncanny.
At ground level, the city completely lacks mystery.
Old buildings and streets are continuously bulldozed to make way for dramatic steel and glass skyscrapers.
But despite the lack of abandoned cobblestone streets or creaky, haunted cathedrals, China?s capital has a rich history of spooky stories --mostly involving imperial intrigue and traditional superstitions.
?China-based Newman Tours explores some of these tales with itsrecently launched Beijing Ghosts tour, the only English-language excursion for people wantingto explore the city?s eerie side.
?We introduce [tourists] to all of the local ghost stories and folklore and try to scare them a bit while we?re at it,? says Daniel Newman, managing director of Newman Tours.
Guide Christopher Pegg starts the evening tour from theBeihaimetro station, leading visitors through two dozen stops in the winding hutongs ?- narrow, maze-like alleys -? near Houhai Lake and around Prince Gong?s Mansion for two hours of fright and fun.
Traditional hutong homes and the stunning, enormous Prince Gong?s Mansion provide the perfect backdrop for bone-chilling tales.
The restored historic site may look cheery during the day with its gardens and bright colors, but it has a dark back story, saysPegg.
?Heshen, a renowned official during the Qing Dynasty, built Prince Gong?s Mansion in 1777.
"The Qianlong emperor at the time greatly favored Heshen and allowed him to get away with whatever he wanted," says Pegg. "Heshen loved to increase people?s taxes and take the extra for himself; he was rumored to have millions of ounces of silver ? a percentage of the national income.
"When Qianlong was very young, he went to play a trick on one of the concubines. He pulled on her hair, and she spun around and she smacked the little child.
"But you?re never allowed to hit the prince, so she was promptly beaten and demoted and, because she was shamed by all of this, she decided to kill herself."
Emperor Qianlong was mortified by her death.
"He was so distraught that he bit his thumb and left a bloody mark on the girl?s neck because he wanted to be able to identify her in the next life," says Pegg.
"Heshen was born the same year the concubine died and he looked a lot like the concubine -- he even had a red birthmark on his neck.
"They say Heshen had Qianlong?s favor because he was a reincarnation of the concubine. Of course, eventually Emperor Qianlong died and Heshen was not so popular any more and they promptly decided to execute him by slow slicing -- death by a thousand cuts."
According to the legend, afterward bloody footprints were later outside Heshen's home -- he'd supposedly returned to look for his silver.
Heshen?sgruesome end sets the tone for the tour, as visitors weave through paths around the apparently haunted home of this poor soul.
Tourists alsolearn aboutthe twisted past of the Ming Dynasty?s most notorious and murderous ruler, Emperor Yongle, and other horror stories from Imperial China?s ruthless leaders.
The most intriguing part of the tour is the chance to interact with Beijing?s spirits -- and even marry them if desired.
Pegg conducts ghost weddings, a tradition in China that allows unmarried spirits to tie the knot with the living. Brave participants can join a ghost in holy matrimony in a traditional Chinese ceremony.
?The main ceremony is honoring ancestors,? Pegg says.
?The head ancestor in heaven is the Jade Emperor; we have a picture of him so people can bow to him and it?s great fun when people bring their parents -- you?re supposed to honor them, as well.?
Sometimes a scarecrow is used as a stand-in for the ghost, but Pegg says often local ghosts are summoned, usually spirits called Mr. and Mrs. E.
?'E' means hungry in Chinese,? says Pegg. ?The hungry ghost is a type of Buddhist ghost with a mouth that?s pencil-thin so they can?t eat anything in the afterlife -- we invite these starving ghosts to the wedding.?
Other activities on the tour include burning paper offerings, including money or paper clothes, for ancestors to use in the afterlife.
Pegg also shows participants an example oftraditional Chinese medicine for cuts, known for its popularity with headless ghosts who bang on pharmacy doors asking for medicine for their wounds.
