Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus awarded on slime-filled Nickelodeon night.
By Aly Semigran
<P>For 23 years, <a href="http://www.nick.com/kids-choice-awards" target="_blank">Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards</a> has been an event in which celebrities can truly let loose. After all, it's hard to have an ego when you're getting covered in green slime or being inducted into the Arm Fart Hall of Fame (we're looking at you, Josh Duhamel). </P><P> </P><P>Nick's 2011 awards show, which aired lived on the network Saturday from Los Angeles, kept with its tradition of stars finding themselves in some truly outrageous situations. <a href="/news/articles/1657689/jack-black-kids-choice-awards.jhtml">Host Jack Black</a>, who was at the helm for the third time (he last helped hand out those coveted orange kaleidoscope blimps in 2008), kicked things off with an over-the-top musical number. The funnyman, wearing a black leather jumpsuit with flames — the first of many quirky wardrobe changes — was joined by a group of dancers to perform his own rendition of the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/black_eyed_peas/artist.jhtml">Black Eyed Peas</a>' hit "I Gotta Feelin'." </P><P> </P><P><div style="background-color:#000000;width:520px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:cms:video:nick.com:784813" width="512" height="288" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></div></div> </P><P> </P><P>Black then introduced the group, as the "Jack Black Eyed Peas," and joined them onstage for "The Time (Dirty Bit)." BEP, who later won the award for Best Music Group, then sang their next single, "Just Can't Get Enough." </P><P> </P><P>The first award of the evening was given out to <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/16504/personmain.jhtml">Johnny Depp</a>, who won Favorite Movie Actor for his performance in "<a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/373927/moviemain.jhtml">Alice in Wonderland</a>." Depp, who emerged from backstage, told the kiddie crowd and voters it was "truly a pleasure to receive this award that comes from you guys. I appreciate it." </P><P> </P><P>After apologizing for beating Black in the category, Depp told Nick viewers, "You guys are the future; take good care of us." The actor then proceeded to get in on the fun, sliming the group of young fans who stood at the foot of the stage. </P><P> </P><P>Depp's stunt led to one of the evening's most memorable — and by far, funniest — moments when "Arthur" actor Russell Brand and "Modern Family" star Rico Rodriguez appeared onstage soon after to present the award for Favorite Voice from an Animated Movie (the blimp eventually went to Eddie Murphy, who got the crowd to sing him "Happy Birthday," for his role in "Shrek Forever After"). </P><P> </P><P>Before Brand and Rodriguez could even begin their banter at the podium, the freshly slimed youngsters began throwing the green, gooey mess at the two stars. In response to the mayhem, Brand declared, "I'm never having children." </P><P> </P><P>Brand continued, as he guarded Rodriguez from the kiddie coup, "I am English! I am your leader! You must not do this, I am royalty! You are all going to juvenile hall. You children are going to prison. You are bad children!" Brand, who is voicing a character in the animated feature "Hop," cried that the moment was not in the script, then joked, "Johnny, I wished you'd drowned them." </P><P> </P><P>They weren't the only stars to get slimed during the broadcast. Heidi Klum, who almost took a spill thanks to her sky-high heels, got hit, as did Jason Segel, who received a slime slushie courtesy of Jane Lynch. Even Snoop Doog — who joined pop-rock group and Nick stars <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/big_time_rush/artist.jhtml">Big Time Rush</a> for their song "<a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/big-time-rush/619502/boyfriend.jhtml#artist=3454569">Boyfriend</a>" — got doused in the green stuff. </P><P> </P><P>As Willow Smith performed her hits "21st Century Girl" and "Whip My Hair," the 10-year-old was cheered on by her dad, Will Smith, and brother, Jaden Smith, who were in the audience. </P><P> </P><P>The final big award of the evening went to <a href="/music/artist/cyrus__miley/artist.jhtml">Miley Cyrus</a>, who won for Favorite Movie Actress for "The Last Song." The former "Hannah Montana" star attempted to put gossip to rest during her acceptance speech as she thanked her family for supporting her career. </P><P> </P><P>Cyrus will no doubt get fans wondering about the status of her relationship with "Last Song" co-star and on-again, off-again beau <a href="http://hollywoodcrush.mtv.com/2011/04/01/mile-cyrus-liam-hemsworth-dating-again/">Liam Hemsworth</a>, whom she thanked for "helping me make movie magic" in the 2010 drama. </P><P> </P><P>The Big Help Award, which was presented by Rosario Dawson, went to singer/actor Justin Timberlake for his devotion to charities, particularly the work he does with Shriners Hospital for Children. In between cracking jokes about burping and getting the crowd to cheer if they had ever helped anyone, Timberlake took the time to tell his young fans, "Your heart is the most beautiful part, so don't forget to use it." </P><P> </P><P>In addition to telling kids they can do their part to help, even with major issues such as the crisis in Japan, the star said something bound to make any adult watching elated: "Listen to your parents!" </P><P> </P><P>Finally, Kourtney and Kim Kardashian hit the stage to help give away the last award of the night for Favorite TV Show, which went to the kid-friendly Nickelodeon hit "iCarly." </P><P> </P><P>Black kept a high energy throughout the show, including some interactions with his "Kung Fu Panda 2" character, Po, — one of which featured a cameo from Britney Spears in a pre-recorded segment. He ended the evening with a slime battle between himself and Jim Carrey, who made a surprise finale appearance. </P><P> </P><P>Other winners included: </P><P> </P><P><B>Favorite Female Singer</B><br> </P><P><LI>Katy Perry </P><P> </P><P><B>Favorite Male Singer</B><br> </P><P><LI><a href="/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> </P><P> </P><P><B>Favorite Song</B><br> </P><P><LI>"Baby" - Justin Bieber </P><P> </P><P><B>Favorite Movie</B><br> </P><P><LI>"The Karate Kid" </P><P> </P><P><B>Favorite Animated Movie</B><br> </P><P><LI>"Despicable Me" </P><P> </P><P><B>Favorite Reality Show</B><br> </P><P><LI>"American Idol" </P><P> </P><P><B>Favorite TV Actress</B><br> </P><P><LI>Selena Gomez </P><P> </P><P><B>Favorite TV Actor</B><br> </P><P><LI>Dylan Sprouse </P><P> </P><P><B>Favorite Book</B><br> </P><P><LI>"Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series </P><P> </P><P><B>Favorite Cartoon</B><br> </P><P><LI>"Spongebob Square Pants" </P><P> </P><P><B>Favorite Male Athlete</B><br> </P><P><LI>Shaquille O'Neal </P><P> </P><P><B>Favorite Female Athlete</B><br> </P><P><LI>Lindsey Vonn </P><P> </P><P><B>Favorite Video Game</B><br> </P><P><LI>"Just Dance 2" </P><P> </P><P><i>What was your favorite moment at the 2011 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards? Pop star extends her record-breaking Twitter dominance over second-place holder Justin Bieber.
By John Mitchell
<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> is known for her prolific Internet presence, and now she can lay claim to another achievement: She's the first person to pass 20 million followers on <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga" target="_blank">Twitter</a>. </P><P> </P><P>Mother Monster has yet to acknowledge the feat on her social network of choice, but, on February 9, when she noticed her number of followers eclipsed 19 million, she good-naturedly <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/167686723906703360" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "19 Million Followers!!! HOLY HOOKER!!! *goes back to work*" </P><P> </P><P>Like many celebrities, Gaga has used Twitter to forge a closer relationship with her fans as well as make announcements about her career and respond to criticism, as she recently did when British music magazine <i>NME</i> named her hit album <i>Born This Way</i> the <a href="/news/articles/1679839/lady-gaga-most-pretentious-albums-born-this-way.jhtml">Most Pretentious Album Ever</a>. </P><P> </P><P>Gaga has been the most followed person on Twitter since August 2010, when she blasted past <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> for the title when she reached 5.6 million followers. </P><P> </P><P>Spears now enjoys 13.6 million followers, making her the seventh most-followed person on the network. Currently in third place is Katy Perry with 15.7 million followers. Shakira (14.5 million) and Rihanna (14.5 million) are not far behind. </P><P> </P><P>The only person within spitting distance of Gaga on Twitter is <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>. The recent <a href="/news/articles/1680248/justin-bieber-birthday-gifts.jhtml">birthday boy</a> has just over 18 million followers. He is, however, a far more prolific tweeter than Gaga; the <a href="http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-lady-gaga-20-million-followers-twitter-20120305,0,4076491.story" target="_blank"><i>Los Angeles Times</i></a> notes that he has sent out 10 times as many tweets as the "Born This Way" diva. </P><P> </P><P>Gaga also enjoys a massive following on <a href="http://www.facebook.com/ladygaga" target="_blank">Facebook</a>, where she's been "liked" by nearly 49 million people. But Mother Monster cannot claim being the boss on Facebook. That title belongs to <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml">Rihanna</a>, who has been liked by nearly 53 million individuals.</p>

The images above are a pretty good advertisement for setting off on one of Britain's most celebrated walking routes but read on for even more reasons to do it.
Even people who generally associate the countryside with manure and things that make you itch risk being won over by the Cotswold Way.
In spring and summer, the wildflowers achieve a kind of hallucinogenic intensity.
Poppies produce floods of red in the fields. Wild angelica grows along the length of the route, and buttercups and geranium add contrasting splashes of yellow and blue.
And you?ll even come across the odd animal.
When I recently walked the trail I saw red kites riding the thermals. At one point a buzzard hovered and dived for prey over a field of freshly cut hay.
At dusk, there?s every chance you?ll spot an owl setting off on a hunting trip.
?Hearty? is one word that sums up traditional English pub food.
?Microwaved? is another, but you?ll find fewer examples of this culinary shortcut than you now, sadly, often get at city pubs.
Classic pub dishes -- and excellent walking fodder -- such as steak-and-kidney pie, fish and chips and bangers and mash are available at most pubs along the Way.
You?ll also be glad the route is as long as it is if you?re not already well acquainted with every proud Englishman?s (and woman?s) favorite liquid refreshment -- ale.
This isn?t fizzy beer or lager but only mildly bubbling stuff that the citizenry have been guzzling for centuries, often in preference to water when the latter was more likely to poison you.
Foreign folk often compare the taste of ale with dishwater and there?s certainly a resemblance. But slake enough of this stuff after stomping miles underfoot each day and its subtle charms -- and the subtle differences between ales -- might win you over.
The Snowshill Arms (Snowshill, nr Broadway; +44 (0)1386 852 653) has a particularly good selection of ales and delicious scampi and chips.
The 500-year-old Dog Inn at Old Sodbury (+44 1454 312 006) is noted not only for that classic English place name but for top-shelf conviviality.
At The Major?s Retreat (High St, Tormarton +44 1454 218 263), the landlord, Roy, willingly offers advice on the next day?s walk section.
Even after one or two of those ales at lunch.
The signposts along the Cotswold Way are so good you could follow the route without a map.
The only time I struggled was in the final two miles as the trail entered Bath, where wooden markers make way for rather feeble stickers left on lampposts.
B&Bs (generally private homes, offering bed and breakfast accommodation) sprout like mushrooms along the Cotswold Way.
Any self-respecting such establishment will serve a ?full English? -- a breakfast of eggs, generally fried; sausages, ideally with a dusting of charcoal; hash browns (not what you might think) and a slurry of baked beans, all sluiced down with a mug of tea and served with complete disregard for any supposedly adverse health consequences.
If it doesn't set you up for a full day of walking, a full English risks rendering you immobile for much of it -- but either way it will probably taste good so the risk's worth taking.
The breakfast at the Old Hundred Coach House (One Hundred Lane; +44 1454 218420) in Tomarton was so filling I suspected some lazy fellow walker had slipped an extra load into my day pack for the first hour or so along the trail, but soon the power boost from all that protein kicked in.
If you?re staying in Bath at the end of the walk (and you should visit this beautiful old Roman town, named after what the Romans spent a lot of time doing there), Bodhi House B&B (31A Englishcombe Lane; +44 (0)1225 461 990) is hard to beat for its service and breakfasts that daringly stray beyond just the full English.
The Cotswold Way is not for people in a hurry, often diverting from straight paths to take in a site of interest -- but there?s a lot of interest for people keen on a little mental time travel.
Much of English history involves the different social classes hacking at each other on bits of the beautiful countryside.
Lansdown is one particularly atmospheric such location along the Way, where loyalists and parliamentarians fought a bloody battle in 1643, to no great effect.
In the northern part of the trail, Belas Knap is a Neolithic long barrow that hints at how the English lived 6,000 years ago, before afternoon tea, pub food and probably even ale.
Broadway Tower is a narrow, graceful tower like something out of a Brothers Grimm fairytale and with a proprietorial 75-kilometer view over the countryside.
Some people think no long-distance trail is authentic unless you lug your gear from one sleeping post to another, slipping disks as you go.
Thankfully, this view is not obligatory.
Carryabag (+44 (0)1242 250 642) is a helpful service that moves your bags between each overnight stop on the Cotswold Way.
It lets you bring as much luggage as you want on the trip and so each day you can carry only food, drink and rain gear -- almost essential on any English walk.
Just because you?ve had a substantial breakfast and dinner, doesn?t mean you won?t get hungry along the way.
Hyphenated, Lord of the Rings-esque names abound among the well-preserved market towns and villages along the Cotswold Way, where afternoon tea remains a ritual.
In one of these resting spots, Wotton-under-Edge, The Singing Teapot (47 Long Street; +44 (0)7889 865 079), is a fine example of that still plentiful beast, the traditional English tea shop.
You can have afternoon tea here with home-made cakes in an atmosphere that?s welcoming rather than cloyingly genteel.
Across the road, The Edge (44 Long Street, Wotton-under-Edge; +44 1453 844108) is an updated version of the tea shop, where the smoothies and fresh pastries come served with a mellow blues soundtrack.
Both places have a take-out service for walkers who want a picnic for the road. Wotton is also a good overnight stop.
You can complete the Cotswold Way in as few as six days, but you?ll take in far more -- and get used to the taste of ale -- in eight or so. If you?re coming from London (many walkers will be) it makes sense to travel by train to the start of the trail, rather than having to arrange to pick up your car at the other end.
First Great Western trains run from London Paddington to both Cheltenham and Moreton-in-Marsh, with buses and taxis from either station to Chipping Campden, where the trail starts.
From the end of the trail it?s a short walk to Bath Spa station -- and from there a regular rail service (+44 (0)1709 849 244) runs back to London.
For more information visit the official Cotswold Way website and pick up the Cotswold Way National Trail Guide by Anthony Burton, a useful guidebook.
The British Foreign & Commonwealth Office has identified several reasons travelers might suddenly, surprisingly, find themselves in jail and -- wait for it -- it?s because they broke the law.
But these aren?t thieves or drug-runners falling prey to advanced policing strategies.
They?re just travelers who didn?t know what they do back home is not always acceptable everywhere else.
?It is important to remember that laws and customs can vary greatly from country to country,? says Charles Hay, director of Consular Services, adding that what may be perfectly legal in a traveler?s home country could incur fines or jail sentences elsewhere.
The FCO adds that travelers have been particularly caught off guard in the Netherlands, Italy and the United Arab Emirates recently.
Some of the lesser-known crimes identified by the FCO are below.
Let us know if you?ve ever fallen foul of a law you didn?t know you were breaking in the comments.
Netherlands: Don?t carry or use drugs. While the Netherlands has a reputation for being tolerant on the use of so-called ?soft drugs? this exists only for designated areas. Possession of prohibited substances or buying them can carry a prison sentence. Penalty: Arrest, detention.
Venice: Feeding the pigeons is against the law. Penalty: Fines.
Japan: It is illegal to take some commonly available nasal sprays containing pseudoephedrine into Japan. Penalty: Fines.
Barcelona: It is against the law to wear a bikini, swimming trunks or to go bare-chested away from the beach-front area in Barcelona. Penalty: Fines.
Singapore: Chewing gum on the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system in Singapore is strictly prohibited. Penalty: Fines.
Thailand: It is illegal to import more than 200 cigarettes into Thailand. Penalty: Large fines and confiscation.
Italy (Florence): It is an offense to sit on steps and courtyards or to eat and drink in the immediate vicinity of churches and public buildings in Florence. Penalty: Large fines.
Saudi Arabia: In Saudi Arabia photographing government buildings, military installations and palaces is prohibited. Penalty: Arrest and detention.
Barbados: It is an offense for anyone, including children, to dress in camouflage clothing. Penalty: Fines.
Nigeria: It is illegal to take mineral water into Nigeria. Penalty: Fines, confiscation.
Fiji: Sunbathing topless is prohibited. Penalty: Fines.
Maldives: Public observance of religions other than Islam is prohibited for non-Maldivians and visitors. Penalty: Arrest, detention.

Pan-seared scallops, artichoke sauce with white truffle, crisp polenta and sugar snap peas.
If that sounds like the kind of meal you?d get at a Michelin-starred restaurant, you?re not wrong.
But instead of the soft tones of violins or pianos, the soundtrack to this meal comprises jet engine roars and requests to fasten your seatbelt.
They?re items from the menu Air France began serving to select business class passengers from February this year.
Michel Roth is the latest Michelin-starred chef working with Air France to provide the highest paying passengers with quality cuisine.
He follows in the footsteps of fellow Frenchmen Joel Robuchon and Guy Martin.
?It?s not about a gimmick or outdoing your competitors,? says Godwin Mak, marketing and communications manager, Air France and KLM. ?It?s about keeping your customer satisfied.?
It?s one of the ways airlines are now trying to woo and retain their most valuable passengers.
KLM World Business Class has employed top international chef and culinary director at Michelin star Amber restaurant in Hong Kong, Richard Ekkebus.
Last year before the London Olympics, British Airways launched an in-flight menu for first and business class created by Heston Blumenthal and Michelin-star chef Simon Hulstone.
?Customers are becoming increasingly discerning when it comes to in-flight food, and expect the very best from airlines, particularly full-service carriers like us,? saysMarkTazzioli, British Airways menu design manager.
In spite of the challenges to designing and preparing elaborate menus for consumption at high altitude, thetrend seems here to stay.
?Everyone has a strong opinion about airline food,? says Ekkebus. ?But few people are aware that they encounter a loss of 20% of their five taste buds when eating a meal at over 10,000 feet.
?This is the main reason people find food bland and tasteless on planes. These challenges are what makes it so interesting to get involved; to try to find a way to overcome them.?
He tries to overcomes theissue by working with concentrated flavors, herbs and spices.
There are limitations.
?All food needs to fit on small plates and needs to be prepared, then properly cooled down to ensure it can be kept until it can be reheated safely,? Ekkebus says.
It?s important to ensure that what you want to achieve is realistic, he adds.
?Dishes need to please a broad spectrum of passengers, with cultural, religious, dietary and taste differences.?
More: Skip the pasta! And other unsavory truths about airplane food
BritishAirways'Tazzioli also acknowledges challenges with designing menus to be eaten on a plane.
?We challenged Heston (Blumenthal) to come up with the ultimate in-flight dish, the taste of which wouldn?t be compromised by cabin pressure, low humidity and high altitude?s effects on taste buds,? he says.
One of Blumenthal?s recommendations was to use ingredients high in umami, a savory flavor known as the ?fifth taste,? which occurs naturally in foods such as seaweed, tomatoes, mackerel and parmesan cheese.
There's a chance those in economy class could benefit.
?We will partner with chefs on a selective basis where we think this adds value for our customers. This could apply to any class of travel,? says Tazzioli.
KLM and Air France are among the growing number of airlines that now provide more up-market options for their economy-class passengers.
You can order from an a la carte menu prior to traveling -- at an additional cost of course.
?This option has proven to be very popular,? Mak says. ?We offer a three-course meal including entre, main and dessert on most intercontinental flights.?
Ekkebus is in favor of airlines providing more quality dining options in coach.
?This could be done by other food professionals, not only by Michelin-starred chefs,? he says. ?I think every chef has the ability to bring a fresh perspective, to bring innovation to airline menus.?
Can food beenough to entice business travelers?
David Hughes, a frequent corporate traveler, sayshe can?t imagine a situation where he would pick an airline based on the food.
?The main choice parameters for me are; safety, schedule, price, comfortand frequent flyer program -- being treated as ?special,?? he says.
Hughes does concede that employing celebrity chefs can show the airline is ?doing everything it can to treat you special, and we're investing in you by splashing out on chefs who know what they're talking about.?
Ekkebussays customer feedback indicates they?re enjoying the fine dining experience.
The response to British Airway?s umami menus has also been extremely positive according to Tazzioli.
Would you choose an airline based on its menu? Leave a comment.

Once upon a time it was the sunlit fjords, clean cities and reputedly gorgeous locals that drew tourists to Scandinavia.
Now it?s crime, grime and darkness that?s equally likely to reel them in.
A recent boom in the popularity of so-called Nordic noir -- TV cop dramas and crime novels based in northern Europe -- has seen fans making pilgrimages to the scene of the crime, the Scandinavian cities featured therein.
But why stop there?
With France tipped as the next hotbed of Euro-crime fiction, there?s plenty of vacation inspiration from the doings of Gaelic gumshoes.
There?s no reason to limit your detective travels to Europe.
Why travel like a private eye? The reason, as Sherlock Holmes would say, is elementary.
Whereas traditional guidebooks stick to the boring old tourist mill, crime fiction steers its readers to the seamier corners of the city, where mystery, adventure and possibly even sauciness lie in wait.
Let?s look at the evidence.
Detectives: Mikael Blomkvist, a bed-hopping journalist whose worthy but dull scoops lead him to lock horns with suits, sadists and psychopaths.
Lisbeth Salander, a tattooed security consultant who hacks computers, kicks ass and wreaks nasty revenge.
Both appeared in Stieg Larsson?s ?Millennium? trilogy.
Guide books say: Pretty Scandinavian city once home to Vikings and ABBA.
Crime fiction says: In Sdermalm, the buzzing island suburb that both Blomkvist and Salander call home, you?ll find stunning views, interesting shops and groovy people.
Stockholm City Museum now offers guided tours of Millennium trilogy locations.
Crime scene: Mellqvist Kaffebar, Hornsgatan 78; +46 (0)76 875 29 92. The coffee shop and cafe was a favorite of both the late Larsson and his characters.
Detectives: Inspector Sarah Lund, an obsessive near-sociopath with a stylish taste in knitwear who has relentlessly chased suspects through three twisty seasons of TV drama ?The Killing.?
Guide books say: Visit the twee Little Mermaid or the happy hippies of Christiania commune.
Crime fiction says: Lund?s city is dark, cold, perpetually overhung with rain clouds, riddled with corruption and littered with corpses.
Lund's $370 Faroe island sweater might steal the show, but there are plenty of other stars, not least the elaborate brick-built City Hall, the austere police headquarters or the upscale sterbro district that Lund initially called home.
Crime scene: Holberg No. 19 cafe, Holbergsgade 19d; +45 33 14 01 90. A favorite of ?Killing? star Sophie Grbl.
Detective: Inspector John Rebus, a grizzled former military man whose prodigious love of jazz about equals his thirst for beer and whisky.
Guide books say: Och aye! Bagpipes, tartan and ancient castles.
Crime fiction says: Och no! Rebus pursues murderers, gangsters and bent politicians through Edinburgh?s back alleyways and dark staircases to locations ranging from rundown housing projects to the Scottish parliament -- with plenty of booze stops along the way. The guided Rebus tour does it best.
Crime scene: The Oxford Bar, 8 Young St.; +44 (0)131 539 7119. Real life regulars at Rebus?s favorite watering hole crop up in author Ian Rankin?s novels.
Exhibit D: Paris
The detective: Commissaire Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg, a scruffy daydreamer who wouldn?t last cinq minutes in most police forces. But quelle surprise, his eccentric methods get results.
Guide books say: Ah Paris! City of romance, of style, of architecture, of je ne sais quoi.
Crime fiction says: Ah Paris! City of pestilence, superstition and medieval grudges.
Author Fred Vargas conjures a French capital of introspective and untidy communities populated by amiable weirdoes.
It?s a far cry from the boutique-filled boulevards. This is a grubbier, more vital world and, as Vargas?s florid plots unfurl, no less filled with je ne sais quoi.
Crime scene: Pre-Lachaise Cemetery, Av. Gambetta. Built to re-accommodate Paris black death victims, this tangled graveyard is classic Adamsberg territory.
The detective: Inspector Harry Hole, a brilliant sleuth whose maverick methods, alcoholism and troubled love life leave him constantly teetering between promotion and dismissal.
Guide books say: Boats in museums -- choose from Viking vessels or the Kon-tiki, weird park-based art (the heebie jeebie-inducing Vigelandsparken sculpture collection) and an opera house. Plus fish.
Crime fiction says: There aren?t really any mean streets in Oslo -- Hole?s home address on Sofies Gate is in the city?s leafy Hanshaugen district -- so Nesb adds grit via his hero?s frequent trips to bars such as the Underwater pub (so gritty it hosts regular opera nights).
Crime scene: Restaurant Schrder, Waldemar Thranes Gate 8; +47 22 60 51 83. A stodge-serving Norwegian eatery frequented by Hole when he?s barred elsewhere.
The detective: Fabio Montale, a boozy and lovelorn cop hungry for justice and hungrier for Mediterranean cuisine.
Guide books say: Explore the Old Port, stroll along La Canebire avenue, lose yourself in the exotic Panier district.
Crime fiction says: Writer Jean-Claude Izzo captures the smells and tastes of Marseille, but imbues Montale with his own ambivalence toward the city.
In his trio of crime novels, Izzo spends half his time hymning about France?s second city and the rest despairing about its evils. As he bluntly puts it: ?Marseille isn't a city for tourists. There's nothing to see.?
Crime scene: Chez Loury, 3 Rue Fortia; +33( 0)4 9133 0973. Also a keen food writer, Izzo sings the praises of this classic Provenal restaurant.
The detective: We?re back in Sweden, this time in the southern Skne peninsula where insomniac Inspector Kurt Wallander defies his own shambolic lifestyle to catch criminals.
Guide books say: The charming town of Ystad is surrounded by pretty fields, splendid castles and golf courses. Zzzzzzz.
Crime fiction says: Writer Henning Menkell sees only stark, windswept countryside where bodies wash up on deserted beaches and teenagers are butchered in woodland glades.
Crime scene: Hotel Continental, Hamngatan 13; +46 411 137 00. Where Wallander eats numerous lonely dinners for one.
The detective: Inspector Benny Griessel, a brilliant sleuth whose maverick methods, alcoholism ... you know the rest.
Guide books say: With Table mountain, the V&A waterfront and vineyards, Cape Town is South Africa?s jewel.
Crime fiction says: Cape Town suffers from the same corruption, poverty and apartheid hangovers as the rest of South Africa, and has the body count to prove it. But writer Deon Meyer?s dusty city is far more exciting than the yawn-inducing destination portrayed in travel brochures.
Crime scene: Carlucci?s Deli, 22 Upper Orange Street; +27 (0)21 465 0795. A sandwich bar that is the hub of the action in Meyer?s page-turning ?Thirteen Days.?
The detective: Chief Inspector Chen Cao, the opposite of Hole and Grissel. He?s a poetry-loving gumshoe who thrives within the rigid structures of China?s Communist Party.
Guide books say: Gaze in awe at ultra-rich Shanghai?s rapidly expanding skyscape.
Crime fiction says: Gaze with respect at disappearing ways of life and those who fall victim when money, power and politics collide.
Crime scene: Laobanzhai restaurant, 600 Fuzhou Road; +86 21 6322 3668. Author Qiu Xiaolong?s favorite.

Singer celebrates grandmother's birthday in New York, live tweeting almost the entire affair.
By John Mitchell
<P>Enjoying a bit of a break after a hectic few months, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml">Rihanna</a> stopped by her grandparents' apartment in Brooklyn, New York, this weekend for an intimate family gathering celebrating her grandmother's birthday. </P><P> </P><P>The Bajan pop sensation live tweeted practically the entire affair, beginning with a stop to pick up some wine and grub. Ever the expert in double entendre, Rihanna <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/rihanna/status/180833717785341952" target="_blank">tweeted</a> a picture of the sausage aisle, calling it her "fave section in Whole Foods." </P><P> </P><P>She posted 21 pictures of the festivities, many with the hashtag #grangrandollybday. </P><P> </P><P><b><big><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/rihanna-parties-with-her-grandparents/1681291/6993949/photo.jhtml">To take a look at some of the photos, click here.</a></big></b> </P><P> </P><P>It's been a busy and at times controversial 2012 for Rihanna, who has endured heavy criticism for her decision to add ex-boyfriend Chris Brown to a remix of her <i>Talk That Talk</i> track <a href="/news/articles/1681128/rihanna-chris-brown-birthday-cake.jhtml">"Birthday Cake."</a> Brown remains on probation after pleading guilty to felony assault of the singer in 2009. </P><P> </P><P>But the only thing on Rihanna's mind this weekend was celebrating her "Gran Gran" Dolly's birthday with family and close friends. Ever the devoted granddaughter, RiRi <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/rihanna/status/180857280101752834" target="_blank">hit the kitchen</a> to cook up some goods before enjoying a glass of wine with her grandparents, who met in Guyana before moving to Barbados and later the U.S. Growing up, Rihanna regularly spent holidays in New York with her grandparents. </P><P> </P><P>The "We Found Love" singer even tweeted her grandfather's confusion over her ever-changing hair color. "My GranDad: Robyn how ya is get hair from red to cream to black??? Cuz ya don't carry wigs," she wrote. "Ya does wash it out?! ME: ROTFL (no words)" </P><P> </P><P>It looks like Gran Gran Dolly got plenty of gifts and the family enjoyed cake and champagne as well as a fun game of dress-up. Rihanna <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/rihanna/status/180890413631143937" target="_blank">posted</a> several pics of both her grandmother and grandfather Lionel sporting sideways-skewed baseball caps and heavy gold chains. </P><P> </P><P>The family visit must have been a nice change of pace for the always-working diva, who is prepping for the May release of her film debut, "Battleship." She's also still promoting her hit 2011 album <i>Talk That Talk,</i> and in a recent interview with <a href="http://www.accesshollywood.com/rihanna-dishes-on-new-album-and-collaborating-with-katy-perry-its-going-to-happen_article_62009" target="_blank">"Access Hollywood,"</a> she admitted she's trying to work out a collaboration with her good friend Katy Perry. "We have been working on this for years. We still are trying to make a song together, Katy Perry and I," Rihanna said. "She is one of my favorite musicians, as well as one of my favorite people in the industry. ... Whenever we're in the same city, we try to do something — whether it's seeing each other for five minutes for a hug [or] whether it's partying all night at some random afterparty for an award show." </P><P> </P><P>As for the duet, it's on the docket if not necessarily in the works. "The song will probably come out in a while," Rihanna told "Access Hollywood." "I won't say that it's happening right now, but it's going to happen."</p>

Singer plays the harmonica, harmonizes with Gary LeVox for free-sprit performance.
By Katie Byrne
<P>Shakira busted out her best Stevie Nicks ensemble during <a href="/news/articles/1638033/siobhan-magnus-eliminated-on-american-idol.jhtml">"American Idol"</a> to perform her new single, "Gypsy," with a little help from Rascal Flatts. </P><P> </P><P>The free-spirit singer — wearing a sparkly tank top, dangling earrings and a floor-length red skirt — started the song out on harmonica. During the first verse, she was joined by some interpretive backup dancers and even threw in some moves herself. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder" id="vid:510711"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>Rascal Flatts singer Gary LeVox then chimed in with backing vocals. As the pair harmonized, they headed to a platform behind the "Idol" judges and Shakira showed off some of her trademark hip-swiveling. She even pulled the harmonica back out to close up the song. </P><P> </P><P>After the performance, host Ryan Seacrest said what most of the viewers were probably thinking: "Gary LeVox and Shakira — I never thought I'd see that!" </P><P> </P><P>He also had a tough question for the Flatts frontman: "What was it like to move your hips with her?" </P><P> </P><P>"I recommend to him to wear a skirt, but he refused," Shakira chimed in. </P><P> </P><P>Rascal Flatts kicked off the "Idol" elimination episode by performing their new single, "Unstoppable," in place of a top-six group number. </P><P> </P><P>Back in February, Shakira released a <a href="/news/articles/1632776/shakira-scores-love-with-tennis-pro-rafael-nadal-in-new-video.jhtml">steamy video for "Gypsy"</a> starring Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal. The video, like the song paired with it, has a much more organic vibe than other tracks from Shakira's 2009 album <i>She Wolf.</i> Directed by frequent Shakira collaborator Jaume de Laiguana, the video tells a love story that plays out on a desert backdrop. It's an ideal setting for the romance between the smiling Shakira and her often-shirtless tennis pro to unfold. </P><P> </P><P><i>What did you think of Shakira's collaboration with Rascal Flatts?
