Narita Airport's plan to be the key hub for international travel to and from Tokyo has been given a huge boost with the announcement that the airport will open a new terminal dedicated exclusively to low-cost flights.
"We concur with the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry that a terminal building dedicated [to low-cost carriers] should be built," said Kosaburo Morinaka, president of Narita International Airport Corporation at a news conference on Tuesday.
The move is widely seen as a response to nearby Haneda Airport's move to attract budget international travelers with its own newly opened terminal, and continues a tit-for-tat battle that has been rising between the two airports in recent months.
