With Simon Cowell rumored to be courting a raft of pop princesses for season two, we grade the judges-to-be.
By James Montgomery

By now, we're all aware that Simon Cowell is reloading. After largely firing blanks on the first season of "The X Factor," he cleared the chamber — casting off judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger (not to mention host Steve Jones) — and is now in the process of lining up a collection of high-profile, hollow-point replacements with which to take down the competition.

Of course, just who Cowell ends up nabbing seems to be a matter of some speculation: His $15 million deal with Britney Spears appeared to be a near certainty, but in the weeks since it was first reported, there's been no movement. And now come rumors that he's courting the likes of Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne to join the "X Factor" team. Are those names just part of a shrewd ploy from Cowell to get Spears to relent on her reported contract demands and insistences on "various perks"? Or is he truly determined to assemble an all-star lineup for the "Factor"? Really, your guess is as good as ours.

Needless to say, we're not sure who will be joining the "X Factor" panel when the show returns later this year (though we suspect Fox may shed some light on the matter at an upfront event for ad buyers on May 14). So, in the meantime, we're just going to take a look at all of the potential judges, comparing their strengths and weaknesses in an attempt to help Cowell put together a potential Murderer's Row. Because we want the "X Factor" to succeed ... lord knows we don't have enough singing competitions on TV at the moment.

Here's our no-holds-barred scouting report for each of the "X Factor" hopefuls:

Britney Spears
Strengths: Spears would instantly become the most famous judge on any U.S. singing competition (sorry Xtina!), therefore automatically raising the profile of a show in desperate need of a good boost. It's the rare combination of both a "career" and a "contemporary" artist, giving the show an answer to "Idol" 's Steven Tyler/ J. Lo combination and the four-headed monster of Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo and Blake Shelton on "The Voice." As a bonus, she would also fill the "rambling" slot vacated by Abdul, not to mention the "thousand-mile stare" void left when Scherzinger got the boot.

Weaknesses:
It's Britney: Live TV may not exactly suit her.

Demi Lovato
Strengths: At just 19 years old, Lovato would give Cowell an in-road to the younger, Disney-fied demographic he so desperately craves. Can definitely sing (check her terrific tear-jerker
for proof), which automatically puts her ahead of something like 90 percent of her singing-competition contemporaries. Has the kind of harrowing backstory that would automatically shut down any hard-luck contestants looking for a few pity points.

Weaknesses: Older viewers might confuse her with Selena Gomez. Could also forget where she is, accidentally reenact that one episode of "Sonny with a Chance" when she's framed for stealing a necklace and subsequently fires a cheese cannon.

Miley Cyrus
Strengths: An established star (with a slightly checkered past), which would give "X Factor" the kind of constant tabloid attention it failed to generate in season one. Has proven on songs like "The Climb" and her recent cover of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" that she's actually got a great voice, which, like Lovato, puts her in rarefied air. Could also use the show as a way of launching the next phase of her career, which would be mutually beneficial and might just spawn something like the certified "Voice" smash "Moves Like Jagger."

Weaknesses: May currently be better known for her paparazzi coverage than her actual music. Might take another hit of salvia and confuse every male contestant with Liam.

Avril Lavigne
Strengths: Has been at it for a while now, has more genuine hits than anyone except Spears. She's also got previous judging experience and seems to be genuinely concerned with her artistic integrity. And although her Goodbye Lullaby album didn't match the commercial heights of her previous efforts, you can't fault her for aiming high.

Weaknesses: Preternaturally appears to be 14 years old. May always wear a hoodie during shows. Is constantly making the "sucking a lemon" face. Doesn't exactly strike us as a people person.

Sound off with your picks for "X Factor" judges in the comments below!

'I'm so happy to be engaged and looking forward to a life of happiness with Liam,' Cyrus says.
By Gil Kaufman

Sometimes on-set romances blossom into the real thing. That's clearly the case with Miley Cyrus and

star

, who announced on Wednesday (June 6) that they are engaged.

"I'm so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam," Cyrus, 19, told People magazine. The couple have been dating for three years since meeting on the set of "The Last Song" in 2009. Australian actor Hemsworth, 22, Cyrus' co-star in that film, proposed to the pop country star on May 31 with a 3.5-carat diamond ring. Earlier this year the couple denied that they were planning a wedding
after Cyrus was spotted with what some thought was an engagement ring.

Cyrus began dating Hemsworth shortly after ending a nine-month relationship with model Justin Gaston. It was been an up-and-down ride ever since, with a break-up
in August 2010, a reconciliation and then another split later that year and a second reunion in April 2011.

In an interview with Details magazine earlier this year, Hemsworth said he tried to be professional on the set of "Last Song," but could not help falling in love with his co-star. "What happened happened, and we've been together ever since," he said. "She makes me really happy. Cyrus and fiancé Liam Hemsworth get 'mega congratulations' from Adam Shankman and Bret Michaels.
By Jocelyn Vena

Miley Cyrus had everyone buzzing last week when she announced her engagement to Liam Hemsworth. And the well-wishes keep pouring in for the couple, who met three years ago on the set of "The Last Song."

"[Miley's] one of the coolest people," Bret Michaels, who recorded the duet "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" with the singer, told E! News. "She's a very talented person and I shout out a mega congratulations to her."

And from what Michaels said, her groom-to-be is another pretty cool person. "I took him on an insane ride in the Bentley," Michaels recalled. "I took him in the car and we whipped up and down the [Sunset] strip very fast ... Liam and I took the car out and raced hell ... You can tell he rocks and he's a good dude."

But the love doesn't end there. Cyrus and Hemsworth's co-star in "The Last Song," Kelly Preston, also has love for the soon-to-be-married pair. "Miley's like a second daughter and there's no one more perfect for her! I love Liam!" she said, adding that she is "so happy" for the couple.

"Rock of Ages" director Adam Shankman also witnessed their love bloom on the set of the film when he was a producer for the Nicholas Sparks big-screen adaptation. "I sort of want a finder's fee for Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. I cannot tell you. It made me cry," he told People.com, adding that their chemistry was pretty immediate.

"I remember that first day of shooting when they first kissed and Miley walked by my sister [producer Jennifer Gibgot] after they shot the kissing scene," he said. "She goes, 'This is gonna work.' I'll tell you what's so great. That thing about opposites attract. Their fundamental core values are the same, but he's really mellow and she's really hyper. So it really works together."

Sure, they haven't even walked down the aisle yet, but Shankman is already thinking about Miley/Liam 2.0. "It's extraordinary, and I'm so happy," he said. "I'm scared at how beautiful those children are going to be."

A movie expert weighs in on why the teen dramedy was a box-office flop.
By Jocelyn Vena

Last Friday, Miley Cyrus' soapy teen dramedy "LOL" opened to a limited release in nine states. The film, by all accounts, didn't perform the way a film starring Cyrus, "Twilight" star Ashley Greene and one-time screen siren Demi Moore, might be expected to.

"LOL," an English-language adaptation of a French Film of the same name, grossed only $46,500 in 105 theaters. While it's hard to tell why the film underperformed, it seems that a lack of marketing leading up to its debut may have played a role in that. The flick follows the story of a teen, Lola (played by Cyrus), as she faces the strife of first love in a world driven by technology.

"It's really hard to say because we've heard absolutely nothing about it. I think there was some buzz about this was sort of going to be a different type of breakout role for Miley. I'm not a fan of Miley, but I would actually like to see that and I think a lot of people would," Brooke Tarnoff, a senior editor at Next Movie, told MTV News about the lackluster interest in the flick once it dropped.

With so few eyes on the release leading up to May 4, it's hard to tell if the performance had anything to do with Cyrus. Tarnoff added, "Maybe the selling power of Miley has diminished. I think her fanbase may be less loyal than it was in the 'Hannah Montana' days, but it's all kind of moot."

The film had gotten some attention when Cyrus and Greene were spotted filming it back in 2010. But, after shooting wrapped, little else was heard about the film until a trailer dropped in mid-April, three weeks before the limited release.

"There's obviously an audience for pretty much anything," she continued. "And this one having a 'Twilight' star and Miley Cyrus, who still has some cache, it's just [a missed opportunity]."

Regardless of the film's box-office performance, Cyrus seemed proud of it. She took to Twitter over the weekend and brushed off the low numbers. "Thank u so much for everyone who went to see LOL," she wrote. "It is a film I loved making and I am proud of.... Singer goes guerrilla for clip, which features a madcap dash around Barcelona.
By James Montgomery

In her previous videos, Shakira's gone global, game-set-match and, after shooting "She Wolf," probably to the chiropractor. And now, in her new video for "Loca," she's gone guerrilla.

Shot run-and-gun style in Barcelona last month, the "Loca" clip follows Shakira and her crew on a madcap dash around the city — including scenes shot in a public fountain and on the back of a motorcycle, which got her in hot water with local authorities. Thanks to all that, it's a decidedly different turn from her past efforts, most of which were big-budget affairs, and all of which avoided getting her in trouble with the law.

"Loca" — which features a cameo by British rapper Dizzee Rascal — is the first single off her new album, Sale El Sol (due October 19), and while the full video won't premiere until Wednesday on MTV.com, you can watch an exclusive 30-second sneak peek right now. There's roller skating, frolicking in a fountain, (very public) costume changes, motorcycle riding and — of course — a whole lot of hip-shaking, too. It's sexy, cheeky and, yes, even a little bit crazy, but then again, what Shakira video isn't? And while "Loca" may be a departure from her previous clips, what makes it great is the simple fact that none of her pop contemporaries — not even Lady Gaga — would dare try something like this. And that's why we love her so much.

But why are you reading this? Have a look at our exclusive preview of "Loca" right now, and make sure to check back on Wednesday for the full experience. Trust us, it's worth it.

Are you excited for Shakira's "Loca" video? Let us know in the comments!

Despite Singapore?s Changi Airport being consistently voted as one of the world?s best in global polls, hanging out there on an extended layover is bound to get old after a while.
For passengers stuck in transit for at least five hours, there?s always the Free Singapore Tour.
As the name suggests, the two-hour tour is free. It?s been around since 1987, but airport officials have just launched an updated version that includes new attractions as well as a brand new night tour.
The revamped Heritage Tour takes visitors on a ride past the usual "must see" attractions of the city: Singapore Flyer; Gardens by the Bay; Marina Bay Sands; Esplanade; Merlion Park; Colonial District; Chinatown; Little India; and the central business district.
This one departs four times a day, at 9a.m., 11:30a.m., 2:30p.m. and 4p.m.

Transparent planes, morphing seats and in-flight acupuncture may not be a reality yet, but the most ambitious airlines are spending billions to implement out-of-the-box thinking.
Airlinetrends.com, an independent research agency focusing on global aviation, published a report ranking the world?s 10 most innovative airlines.
The rankingsKorean Air topped the list for sourcing its own organic farm on Jeju Island for in-flight meals, and for its ?attentive service amenities,? including a female-only lounge at Incheon Airport, female-only bathrooms on aircraft and the world?s first onboard duty-free store. (They should have also included those face air-mist things they stock in the bathrooms ? we?re so addicted.)
A Pineapple Bliss cocktail concocted just for Korean Air's Celestial Bar. The feature that sounds the most fun? Three onboard bars and cocktails designed by Absolut Vodka, complete with a full-time bartender.
The rankings should come as a welcome silver lining for the airline, which faced a net loss in 2011 due to ?high oil prices, a weak Korean won and the slow recovery of cargo traffic,? according to the airlinetrends.com report.

Skakira's official FIFA World Cup song 'Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)' has much company among 2010 soccer anthems.
By Gil Kaufman

It's hard enough to get Americans pumped up to watch a bunch of other country's teams play soccer, but one thing we can all agree on is that the crazy-quilt Pangaea of World Cup anthems is an amazing spectacle to behold. From Shakira's Official FIFA World Cup song "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" to Russell Brand and Robbie Williams' remake of England's unofficial soccer song, "Three Lions," there are a head-spinning array of choices when it comes to soccer soundtracks for the planet's biggest sporting event.

Colombian hip-swiveler Shakira teamed up with South Africa's Freshlyground for the tournament's official song. The propulsive Afro-techno "Waka Waka" has the perfect mix of inspirational lyrics — "The pressure's on, you feel it/ It's time for Africa, your time to shine" — and a raise-the-roof vibe that you can picture pumping out of stereos from Johannesburg to Pittsburgh.

No slouch in the inspiration department, Mr. "I Believe I Can Fly" himself, R. Kelly, also cooked up an official FIFA World Cup anthem with a little ditty he calls "Sign of a Victory." The collabo with the Soweto Spiritual Singers choir — who will perform the song with Kelly at Friday's opening ceremonies — bubbles along on a syncopated, African percussion beat while Kelly sings, "I can feel the spirit of the nation/ And I can feel my wings riding the wind." The choir backs him up with an uplifting, wordless chant under the chorus "That's the sign of a victory." He also manages to incorporate the phrases, "let the games begin," "we can achieve anything, including the impossible," "raise the flag" and "scream like you want to win."

Somalian/Canadian rapper K'Naan also went the inspirational route with his official Coca-Cola anthem, "Wavin' Flag," which has the rising-up-from-oppression vibe of a classic Bob Marley tune. With assists from Will.I.Am and David Guetta, the soaring tune camouflages a song about poverty and oppression in a heart-stirring call to arms to let your banner fly.

Pepsi wasn't about to get aced out of this action, so it recruited Akon and Keri Hilson to make a video with soccer stars Lionel Messi of Argentina and Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba called "Oh Africa," as part of the celebration of the continent's first hosting duty for the global event. It also has the obligatory South African township jive stomp, and like the other songs, is as much about Africa's spot in the sun as it is about sports.

And because there's probably some rule about Bono having to participate in any globally unifying event, the U2 singer hooked up with Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo and John Legend for a thumping, Afro-pop cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up."

Another cover that was recorded as an unofficial English World Cup anthem is a banging remake of Tears for Fears' "Shout" called "Shout for England," laid down by U.K. rapper Dizzee Rascal and actor James Corden at the behest of former "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell. It has a thundering chorus that adds a thick acid-house beat to the original tune as Rascal spits lyrics to inspire England's soccer stars to victory.

For no apparent reason, New York's We Are Scientists have also offered up a song for England's club, the appropriately named, "Goal! England," a slice of T. Rex-inspired garage rock thunder that features the unforgettable lines, "Kicking the kicking the kicking the kicking the ball/ Kicking it into the goal/ Go, go, go, go go ... England!"

Then there is the official FIFA Mascot song from Cuban-American rapper Pitbull, who hooked up with South African group TKZee and England's Dario G to let the dogs out for the high NRG club banger "Game On." Taking things a little less seriously is U.K. legend Robbie Williams, who formed "The Squad" with comedians Russell Brand, Daniel Baddiel and Frank Skinner to record a remake of England's unofficial soccer song, "Three Lions." The mash of opera, a soaring choir singing, "It's coming home/ Football's coming home," a bouncy, Madness-like ska pop vibe and self-deprecating soccer-centric lyrics about England's chances of regaining football glory make for a lovably comic mess.

Among the other acts on the FIFA-sanctioned soundtrack to the international soccer showdown, Listen Up!: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album, are: Nneka ("Viva Africa"), Matisyahu featuring Nameless ("One Day"), Wyclef Jean, J Pre, Jazmine Sullivan and B. Howard ("Ke Nako"), and late South African opera singer Siphiwo Ntshebe (known as the "black Pavarotti") featuring former South African president Nelson Mandela ("Hope").

And of course, if none of these tunes provide the right kick, there's always the unofficial World Cup Song contest, with nearly 400 entries. The top five is currently dominated by England, with Christian singer Gerry Asmus' "It's Our Game," a flowery pop piffle about King George and English pride, holding down the top spot at press time.
