Old Book Festival turns the page on a new era

If you believe e-books and Kindle have killed hard-cover books, the crowds at the 20th annual Old Book Festival might change your mind.

Kicking off Wednesday in the Kanda district, the Old Book Festival drew more than 30,000 people during its first three hours.

"It's best to come on the first day, because that's when the good stuff comes out," said 71-year old Sosuke Akikawa. "By the second day, the books get pawed over and handled about and less pristine."

A rare-book connoisseur, Akikawa has been coming to the Kanda Festival for the past 10 years to rifle through bargain racks, pick up textbooks or just sit down in one of the landmark cafes with a novel and a cup of spicy coffee.
